When reviewing the writings of John Smith and other various writers, we begin to envision the significant roles they played in the colonization of the New World. Despite the hardships John Smith faced while attempting to colonize Jamestown, he implemented strong values and principals such as “one who does not work, shall not eat.” In Smith’s eyes all people were to work together to achieve a common goal. He always thought about what was best for his people, and made sure to devise strategies that helped the entire group. It was the goal of the British from the very start to spread to the Americas and expand the British Empire. The intention of Jamestown was to permit the people of that colony to ship back goods and valuable resources back to England. The meaning of colonization was to build an empire by expanding to a new location by dominating that region. As the new settlers migrated into the New World, they showed little respect to the Native people of that land. One primary account outlining the difficulties of colonization, was written by John Smith himself. In his tale, he described the relationships he formed in Jamestown with the Native Americans. After the region of Jamestown was established, a tribe of Indians led by Powhatan came in contact with Smith. As time went on, other difficulties began to arise. The Americans grew displeased with the British who made attempts to gain control over the settlers of European origin. The British wanted to tax the new colonies in order to gain more money. The colonists wanted to have similar equal rights like the British. They resisted the British, which led to bloodshed. The theory behind liberty and justice for all settlers was in hopes to gain freedom from harsh British rule. This was another prominent point in history for the early Americans. The difficulties they endured throughout the formation of America were eventually worth the sacrifices. The mutual goal for equality was what eventually united all of the colonies. Today’s America still implements these common goals and ideals.
There was a great deal of negativity and difficulties surrounding early colonization. However, now we see that all of these difficulties were a necessity in achieving today’s modern society. It is true that many tactics and strategies employed in early colonization were cruel and ungodly. Evidence shows that early settlers only knew to solve issues by wars and destruction.
