Jonas’s world is called perfect. No feelings, no real knowledge, no animals, nothing special; that is the “perfect” world that Jonas lives in. Would one consider that perfect? In the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas learns the power of pain, sorrow, and joy through memories he receives from the Giver.…
In Peter Singer’s article “Famine, Affluence, and Morality” there are a few items that require further discussion. Peter Singer critiques our ordinary ways of thinking and in spite, very few people have accepted his conclusions. I will discuss Peter Singer’s goal and his presented argument in relation to this issue. In return, I will also mention the three counter-arguments to his position and the responses made by Singer. It is important to define Singer’s concept of marginal utility and to show the relation to his argument. We will need to compare how the ideas of duty and charity change in Singer’s proposed world. Finally, in conclusion my own personal response will be made to Singer’s argument either supporting his position, going against his position, or simply in the middle of his position. To begin one must truly understand the definition of an argument in the terms of philosophy. “For philosophers, then, the term "argument" doesn 't imply the idea it often does when we use the term to suggest anger, emotion, and hurt feelings. Rather, in this context, arguments simply present a conclusion and suggest why certain reasons indicate that conclusion is true, or probable” (Mosser K, 2010).…

He talks about comparing different undeveloped groups’ eating habits to those of the westerner. In the Giver, Jonas’s society is created in a different way than our society is created. For example, There they first have to sign up for and then it have to be approved by the committee. Father told “The committee always makes the list in advance and its right there in the office at the Nurturing Center” (12). In Jonas’s society, there is a rule that anybody cannot have more than two babies’ one boy and a girl. Jonas’s mother reminded “Two children-one male, one female-to each family unit” (8). If someone in Jonas’s society has more than three babies then, they will release him from the society. His mother reminded “You know that there’s no third chance. The rules say that if there’s any third transgression, he simply has to be released” (9). Our society is different from Jonas’s society because families are created in a different way. In our society we can reproduce babies whenever we want and we do not need to sign up neither need to be approved by the society. We can also have as many babies we want in our society there is no limited number or rule for it. In our society, if we have lot of babies there is no problem and nobody has the right to release someone from the society. The parents take care of their own children they don’t need a nurturing center for…

A troubled economist, Jonathan Swift, writes “A Modest Proposal” to sarcastically suggest his solution to Irelands economic struggles. Swift begins his writing rationally and factual; then, he continues to, not so modestly, propose that eating the poor populations children will solve all the kingdoms’ problems. The suggestion is narrated so nonchalantly. He enlightens his readers that selling the children of the poor to the richer will help provide nourishment, unburden mothers, and reduce the population of beggars. Swift moves on by suggesting rational, helpful ideas as if they are outlandish and inferior to his solution. This narration is attempting to expose the rash way the people have been dealing with social and economic problems. In addition, he is drawing attention to the problems in Ireland, including the numerous amount of underprivileged citizens.…
According to Gildemeister, Berkeley is a west-coast Mediterranean climate (distinct wet and dry seasons). In the late spring and early fall, strong offshore winds of sinking air typically develop, bringing heat and dryness to the area. In the spring, this is not usually a problem as vegetation is still moist from winter rains, but extreme dryness prevails by the fall. The warmest and driest months are typically June through September, with the highest temperatures occurring in September. Mid-summer (July-August) is often a bit cooler due to the sea breezes and fog which are normally most strongly developed then (Gildemeister, 2004, p. 109).…
