Jonas In The Giver

The development of Jonas throughout The Giver gives Jonas the opportunities to learn from his mistakes, so that we have the ability to learn and grow with what we are taught. The development of Jonas is viewed in many different ways, for example whenever Jonas was selected to to be the receiver of memory, he started to realize that there is more than his city. Whenever he started to receive his training he experienced snow, warmth, and many other things that his community didn’t have, because they went to a community that was all the same but the Giver and the Receiver. For example in the text it states, “jonas frowned. “The whole world?” He asked. “ I don’t understand. Do you mean not just us? Not just the community? Do you mean elsewhere, too?” He tried, in his mind, to grasp the concept. “ I’m sorry, sir. I don’t understand exactly. Maybe I’m not smart enough. I don’t know what you mean when you say ‘the whole world’ or ‘generations before him.’ I thought there was only us. I thought there was only now.” As you can see Jonas lim the beginning doesn’t know a lot about his community and his community before him.
He began to think differently about his community. He began to think why did his community take all of this wonderfulness that he has learned away from his community. He began to feel feelings, he also realized things he was doing as a child meant something else in the real would. Like when he would play war, after he got the memories he realized that playing war means killing other people. Also whenever the Giver showed Jonas that video of his faller “releasing” the child, Jonas found out that his father was killing the child. So as you can see Jonas began to view his community differently after he started to receive his
