Jubilee Glee Short Story
The first story is the Jubilee Express.

Jubilee Dougal was having the worst day of her life on Christmas Eve. First, her parents were put into jail after a commotion in a gallery. Second, she had to go to Florida to celebrate the holiday with her grandparents - which means she won't be seeing Noah for their anniversary.

Noah is the perfect boyfriend, Jubilee thought. Aside from being good looking, he is an athlete, mathlete, school government bigwig- the kind of person you think must only date models and that is why Julie, being an ordinary girl, loves him so much.

I feel extremely responsible for the horrid tragedy of what had happened to that young lady. On the other hand at the time it took place I was in a furious temper; I had tried on this dress, and well.... it just didn’t suit me at all! Then the girl- had tried on the dress as if she was wearing it. And it just suited her. She was the right type for it. She was very pretty too- with big dark eyes. I caught sight of the girl smiling at Miss Francis- as if to say, “doesn’t she look awful”- and I was absolutely furious. That is when it all happened. I lost all sense of what was right and let anger and jealousy fill me up to the direst cruelty. I said without second thought of consideration to the manager, “this girl had been very impertinent”. You see it didn’t seem so bad at the time. She was pretty and looked as if she could take care of herself. Well now I know well- ‘never judge a book by its cover’. However now it is too late! I cannot even go back to say, “sorry Eva Smith”, never mind helping her, thought if I could now that I know the great, vile grief I helped to cause this girls death, I would do all I can for her. Oh why had this had to happen? I feel I can never go to Milward’s again- I noticed even this afternoon- I suppose some of them remember.…

Margaret Walker’s novel Jubilee focuses on the life of a slave girl by the name of Vyry who gains her freedom at the end of the Civil War and sets out with her children, Minna and Jim, and husband, Innis Brown, to make a new life for their family in the Reconstruction Period. Walker’s awareness of the southern plantation tradition is made clear throughout Jubilee in the way that she debunks the negative tropes placed on the shoulders of African Americans by the nostalgic white writers of the South; Walker also incorporates her knowledge of black oral tradition by way of small snippets of text on every page which marks the start of a new chapter in the text.…

Faye Moskowitz writes about a traditional Jewish Christmas as she was taking up in Michigan in the thirties. The theme of religious tradition is reflected in this piece. She starts by saying “Jewish Christmas-that’s what my gentle friend calls Chanukah.” It indicates how as a young child she understands her religion and knows that those who are not Jewish are gentiles. Her experience of Christmas was miserable because they were the minority and everyone else celebrated it with excitement and delight.…

By contrast, Noah simply stood under the hot water, letting it roll off his flesh in beads. He was seventeen and scrawny; a caricature of an adolescent misfit who, like Carrie White, looked the part of the sacrificial goat. His long wet hair hung in messy strands, obscuring his face and neck until all that could seen was a thin slit of pale flesh and two sunken-in eyes void of any emotion.…
