Kanye West Ignorance About Slavery Summary
Kanye West’s Ignorance about Slavery is Damaging
The musician’s ignorant comments about slavery is producing damaging effects on the black people’s history. Kanye West announced that slavery was a choice. Clearly, he didn’t read his history books nor listened to his lessons in school. He also appears to be blinded by the overwhelming evidence of slavery and racism that is deeply rooted in the U.S. history, culture, and society.
The music artist apparently has been spitting out anti-black comments these couple of days. To clarify, slavery was never a choice. West’s comments is proof that black people do not have a group mentality.

Before reading Slavery in the North by Shane White I was not familiar with the slavery that took place in the north. Shane White talks about northern slaves by stating “we would expect them to be well acculturated to white society. Yet evidence from an archaeological dig at Parting Ways hints at a more complex picture.” Shane’s point of view is believing that the blacks had a harder time adapting to white society than we thought. However, I believe slaves in the north were able to acculturate into white society unlike Shane.…

George Washington was the first president and the first precedence when it comes to how to deal with slavery. He absolutely treated slaves as the human beings they were and knew it was morally wrong to keep them captive; and while he was handcuffed with what he could do politically, he was definitely a white Founding Father that was against the institution of…

In Douglass's book, he discussed several points about slaves being treated worse than livestock by telling a few stories about what he experienced. A few points Douglass discussed were about how animals were fed better and how a few slaves had to steal or beg their neighbors for food because of the small amounts of food they recieved. He also discussed points about Mr. Covey forcing adultery on Caroline and about how the animals could get the slaves into trouble.…

William’s harsh words towards Tibeats made him frown, upon such inhumanity of how cruel and unfair he was towards his slaves. Although I must agree with William Ford, for standing up to Tibeats actions, it was Tibeats who was always wrong here. Slaves aren't a worthless piece of trash. They are human just like the rest of us. Imagine waking up every morning, and working from the time you arose till the time the moon appeared.…

We know that one of his intended audiences is African Americans because he consistently states things such as “I was compelled to resort to various stratagems” and “Thus, after a long, tedious effort for years, I finally succeeded in learning how to write”. These sentences show us how difficult it was for him and states how he had to go through many trials to finally learn to be literately correct. By not giving up, he shows us how important he thinks it is for slaves to learn how to read and write. We also know that his other audience were white Americans because of his use of contrast. He describes how his mistress changed from being a nice, helpful, and loving woman to being a mean, evil spirited brute because of the simple fact of being a slave holder and her husband’s characteristics rubbing off on her. By stating “Slavery soon proved its ability to divest her of these heavenly qualities” he shows us how much of a negative effect slavery can be not only on African Americans, but also on white Americans. Frederick Douglass most likely chose this audience because many slaves probably did not know the extent of how important it was to read and write,…

Young is describing to the reader his disapproval of slavery, which he justifies spiritually by “the invigorating power of Deity” and intellectually, stating it as discernment. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, discernment is defined as the mental product of divinity and insightful perception to make good intellectual and spiritual judgments (discernment #4). Throughout the passage, it can be seen how strongly Young believes that slavery is undermining a civil and religious law. In his writing, originally published in 1829 as a pamphlet, he is addressing Ethiopians or African people, telling them through God they deserve rights that are being denied to them. He goes on to insinuate that all people are descendants from African and God meaning all rights should be inclusive.…

Douglass’s Narrative shows how white slaveholders continue slavery by keeping their slaves ignorant. At the time Douglass was writing, many people believed that slavery was a natural state of being. Slave owners keep slaves ignorant of basic facts about themselves, such as their birth date or who their parents were. This ignorance robs children of their natural sense of individual identity. As slave children grow older, slave owners prevent them from learning how to read and write, as literacy would give them a sense of independence and capability. Slaveholders understand that literacy would lead slaves to question the right of whites to keep slaves. Finally, by keeping slaves illiterate, Southern slaveholders maintain control over what the rest of America knows about slavery.…

A successful way in keeping a person ignorant is to make sure to keep him or her illiterate. This was a strategy used to keep slaves from realizing how inhumane they were being treated. Fredrick Douglass had to learn this on his own. He went through many trials and tribulations to find his own identity. African American slavery, brought about by lack of social justices is the most important political issue in this essay.…

According to Douglass, the American slave system did great harm to both master and slaves. For example in his book Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, it says in chapter 1 page 3 “Only makes a bad matter worse, both for himself and slave whom he would protect and defend” This proves that holding slaves was affecting him because he felt bad.Additionally,Douglass says of his mistress in chapter 7 page 22 “My Mistress was, as i have said a kind…

Music has been an art form used for communicating artist’s feelings and expressions through words and rhythm for centuries. Music allows artists to express thoughts and feelings using dialect while accompanying the words with a rhythm and beat. Although music is enticing to the audience, music listeners rarely completely comprehend the words and focus mainly on the chorus and dance along with the beat. This is why a blog post is a more effective way of communicating an idea than a song. A blog post allows the author to elaborate more on the ideas that would only be stated briefly in a song, and provide more details and factual evidence that will benefit their statements. Music listeners only like a certain few genres of music, and many people don’t listen to rap music at all, therefore they don’t even get a chance to hear what musicians are trying to portray to their audience. Blog posts on the other hand, give the writer a broader audience because there is no beat or music to distract or classify the reader; the only focus is on the authors words. A blog post is a more effective way of communicating and displaying an author’s idea than a song.…
