Keys to College Success

Many first time college students do not do well their first year of college. They really do not know where to begin or even what steps to take in being successful. In the article, "Keys to College Success, " written by Sheila Akers, college success can be achieved in four simple steps if they are all done together and on a normal basis. First, students need to manage their time wisely. They may create a calendar then mark important dues dates of projects, tests, meetings and other significant information on it. They can also set aside a weekly study time set aside for each class. In that time they can study and do work on one subject at a time. Another thing students can do to manage their time intelligently is using a daily or weekly "to-do" list to accomplish their work at a good pace. Second, students need to attend class and take notes. Students should attend class faithfully and not to miss one day of that class. They need to take a lot of class notes during lectures, and use abbreviations to take notes quickly. Looking for signals of importance is a key part in taking notes, which also makes note taking a little easier. After taking notes, they should be reviewed as soon as possible. In doing this it makes it easier to understand and to absorb the information right away, so it would not be forgotten. Third, students should use the PRWR method to study their reading assignments. First they should preview the reading. Students should consider the title, read over the first and last paragraphs, note heading and their relationships in the reading. Next, while students are reading the material, they should mark important parts that will help them in the future to studying. They should take time to read it through from start to finish. After that, students should also write study notes that are clear to read and in their own words. By doing this it makes it easier for the student to comprehend what they are

I also was not organized and ended up missing assignment due dates and this led to my grades being lower than expected. There are several fundamental reasons why students all over the world choose to pursue higher education: to broaden their knowledge base, to achieve financial independence, and to be a part of an environment that fosters personal growth. I truly believe that the best way to accomplish these three goals is to fully immerse oneself in a stimulating environment, where there is an abundance of opportunities to grow both during and after college. I am currently a second-year student at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), and I spent my first year of post-secondary education at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). I am highly interested in pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, but my current institution only offers…

One of the most important first steps is to learn about time management. Learning the strategies of a good time management system and applying them ultimately will benefit the student tremendously. Stanford (n.d.) states that time management skills will help students manage their goals effectively which will assist them in completing homework assignments on schedule and prepare for examinations. Students will have to monitor their time and adjust it accordingly for studies and assignments. While monitoring my time, I found it helpful in selecting the best times to study and complete my homework assignments. It is suggested that students spend at least two hours studying for every hour of class time. I personally plan on following this rule to give me adequate time to complete my assignments. Every student is different, but he can find a time management system that works best to balance school, work, and family. The planning system utilizing a list with prioritizing tasks as “A”, “B”, or “C” along with an “Outlook” calendar seems to work best. Students also need to learn how to set goals and to incorporate their short- term, mid-term and long-term goals into their academic lives. This will allow them to recognize how necessary their short-term goals are and how they affect their long-term goals. One cannot achieve long-term goals without first succeeding in their short-term goals. They go hand in hand. For example, a long-term goal is to get a BA degree, but I cannot accomplish this without first having success in my short-term goal of attending all classes and completing all work assignments on time. For success in another long-term goal of good health, I would need to be committed to eating healthy foods and not over eat because of stress. Exercising regularly and getting enough sleep regardless of other commitments will ensure students a refreshed and…
