Kinetics: The Rate of a Chemical Reaction
Title:
Kinetics: The Rate of a Chemical Reaction
Objectives:
1. To study the kinetics of chemical reaction, 2 I- + S2 O82- I2 + 2 SO42- .
2. To study the effects of reactant concentration (persulphate, S2O82-, and iodide, I-) and temperature on the rate of chemical reactions. ( i) Study the effect of 0.20M (S2O82-) on the rate of chemical reaction. ( ii) Study the effect of 0.10M (S2O82-) on the rate of chemical reaction. ( iii) Study the effect of 0.05M (S2O82-) on the rate of chemical reaction. ( iv) Study the effect of 0.20M (I-) on the rate of chemical reaction. ( v) Study the effect of 0.10M (I-) on the rate of chemical reaction. ( vi) Study the effect of 0.05M (I-) on the rate of chemical reaction. ( vii) Study the effect of temperature at 288K on the rate of chemical reaction. (viii) Study the effect of temperature at 305K on the rate of chemical reaction. ( ix) Study the effect of temperature at 316K on the rate of chemical reaction.
3. To study the order of reaction for S2O82-.
4. To study the order of reaction for I-.
5. To study the rate equation of 2 I- + S2 O82- I2 + 2 SO42-.
6. To study the rate constant in the rate equation of 2 I- + S2 O82- I2 + 2 SO42-.

Results:

When the water was at 10℃ the average rate of reaction was 1.75 mm/s. When the water was at 25℃ the average rate of reaction was 2.98 mm/s. When the water as at 37℃ the average rate of reaction was 3.45 mm/s. Finally, when the water was at 45℃ the average rate of reaction was 4.07 mm/s. Therefore, our data did support our hypothesis because we hypothesized that when the water rose in temperature the reaction rate would speed up, and so it…

This experiment was done to determine the effects of the nature of the reactants, concentration, temperature, surface area and catalyst on the rate of chemical reactions. The nature of the reactants implies a difference if the reactants are aqueous or organic, acidic or basic or if they occur in the same phase or not. Acid-base reactions, formation of salts, and exchange of ions are fast reactions while reactions in which large molecules are formed or broken apart are usually slow. Generally, the rate of reaction is directly proportional to the concentration of the reactants, as well as to the temperature. Greater surface areas and addition of catalysts also increase the rate of chemical reactions.…

After this, a graph was plotted of the average temperature against time. The line produced on this graph was the extrapolated till the 170s mark. The equation of the line was found. The two equations were the equated, the downward sloping and the vertical line and the maximum temperature reached by the reaction was found. Change in temperature was found by subtracting the value obtained by the initial temperature value.…
