LEALES Mentor Case Study
The role of the mentor is to provide guidance and support through a nurturing relationship mentor and protégée relationship, by giving time, being available, maintaining communication, keeping promises, being understanding, listening, providing support while acknowledging limitations and mistakes, with humor and gifts, and especially talking about race/ethnicity and culture. (Chan, 1986) After completion of the LEALES program mentees will be recruited and encouraged to participate as mentors the following year as a way to pay it forward to the next generation of Latino males.
Finally, the last component of the program will be providing opportunities for LEALES members to meet successful Latino males. These opportunities would include by inviting

Given that the target population for the program would identify as first-generation Latino male undergraduate transfers and freshman among those organizations with which LEALES would expect to work closely are: the Cross-Cultural Center (CCC), and LARC. Although it may be anticipated that LEALES will work with many more additional organization, the organizations listed previously are those which offer services which seem especially appropriate for the LEALES population. Given that the target population is so specific; serving first-generation Latino males, perhaps the LEALES program might best be housed under the CCC. The CCC for example offers various programs for multicultural leadership development which could be helpful for the Latino males that make up the LEALES program. The CCC is currently going through changes in the department but it might be expected that LEALES would work closely with the director of the program. Currently the Darlene Esparza is the interim director for the CCC. LEALES could work with the director to come up with ways in which Latino culture could be promoted and better understood throughout the campus. The other organization with which LEALES would partner up with would be LARC. LARC stands for Learning and Academic Resource Center; the center offers students students different workshops on a variety of topics from study strategies to test taking. It also offers tutorial programs lead by student facilitators for certain classes. These types of services might be of special interest to the LEALES members considering that Latino students because of their racial and socio-economic background tend to come largely from under-resourced, understaffed, underperforming, and inadequately funded schools.     I believe these were factors that drew them to “La Raza” studies. The opportunity to learn about their parents culture and their own roots was a great way to gain an interest in their education. Considering that over 50% of the Mexican-American students at Tuscon High School dropped out before graduating, this program was needed as a part of the solution. The problem that needed attention of the school district was the uninterest in education the students had which caused a huge dropout rate- especially with hispanic students. The graduation rate rose to the 90th percentile after this program began. In the testimonios of the students, they made statements on how their academics were not of much importance for them. For many students such as Pricila and Gilbert, school was not very interesting and they had personal and family problems to worry about other than school. For students like Crystal, she did not know of her opportunities and had a hard time transitioning into high school.
