Later Lunch Time In Middle School
Have you ever eaten lunch before other people ate breakfast? 7th grade students at OJ DeJonge do. We eat lunch at 10:15 am! Every student leaves school at 2:52, which gives us about 5 hours without eating anything. Well we think we should change that. The 7th graders should have a later lunch time. The 7th grade’s lunch is at 10:15 am because of having no kitchen to keep the food warm and there is not enough room to keep all of the middle school students in the lunch room. The problem of having lunch too early is that the 7th graders are super hungry after school. Like we said before, there is no kitchen to keep the food warm, and they can't fit the all of the middle schoolers in there to eat lunch at the same time, they also can't …show more content…
Moving it to 1:00 because nobody at school will be eating at that time, and it will not be late because normally people eat lunch around this time. Also we could move the lunch to the other gym when the teachers are free. We could also merge the 7th and 8th graders and have the 6th graders eat separate. Those are the solutions for the problem.

Some will argue that these solutions aren’t feasible but they are. For example people will say moving a kitchen to the middle school will be expensive but they could just buy a stove to warm up the food. Also people say it would be rude to change the teachers schedule but they could start at the beginning of next year. This solution could be better because then the 7th graders won't have such an early lunch time.

The reasons that are listed above is why there should be a later lunch for seventh graders instead of lunch at 10:15 in the morning. If the seventh grade lunch was moved to 1:00 in the afternoon then the 7th graders wouldn't have to deal with lunch after 2nd hour. The 7th grade students would not have to deal with lunch 2 hours and 15 minutes after breakfast. This change will cost about $100 to do but it will have later lunches for the 7th graders at OJ DeJonge middle

This same factor has a ripple effect on the student because it also limits them on what various types of meals they can choose during lunch hour, a poor selection of unhealthy foods leads to poor dieting. “The reimbursement rate for a reduced-price lunch is $2.17 and 24 cents for a paid meal. When you factor in labor and other school costs, schools have less than $1 per day per student to spend on food for lunch”(C.P.F.). Limiting yourself to just $1 dollar to use towards food would be nearly impossible to survive off of, let alone to eat or choose a healthy meal. This not only limits student and young adults of what they are able to eat during lunch if they cannot afford to bring their own lunch, but it also gets them into the habit of making a poor choice in food. “Fewer than 15 percent of the two million American elementary school-aged children eat the recommended five or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables" (Myrdal). If these poor eating habits continue or continue decrease, than the obesity will only continue to grow. In order for our young children of America to begin to change their unhealthy eating habits, parents and other leaders must promote healthy eating habits and explain the importance of proper dieting, which can start by cutting back on processed…

People who think switching the schedules would be hard because then they would run into elementary school schedules and then buses wouldn’t be able to get everyone home on time if the schools shared buses between elementary school and middle school. Although, a solution to this would be to just simply switch the elementary school schedules to earlier. Though some people might say that it wouldn’t be fair to just make younger kids go to school earlier. Though according to www.npr.com, “kids before their teen years don’t need to sleep in as long and don’t stay up as late. This is because their bodies sleep schedule haven’t shifted yet. Teens automatically stay up later, making it hard to get to sleep before 10:30, and sleep in later, making it difficult to wake up before 8:00.” So, this is why it would be easier for an elementary school student to wake up earlier. In addition, according to sleepfoundation.org, “teens are sleep deprived because of early start times.” By just simply switching middle school start times with elementary school start times , which would be a solution to the bus problem, schools could make sure teens are getting the recommended amount of…
