The layup was created by Alvin James and may be the most simple form of a basketball shot however it requires hand eye coordination, balance and agility. Yet it also the most miss shot in all of the basketball shots. Fact from the USA Basketball.
For those that don't know what the layup is..
The layup is a runway shot, An open lane shot, a drive shot and an assist shot. It also leads a pathway to dunks which are really cool.
But learning it yourself can be hard which is why I have created this step by step guide of how to do it.
Firstly
Positioning
To make a layup you have to be in the right spot this means that you are outside the keyway (The rectangular line with bumps and the semicircle at the top) and dribbling in on an angle . Trying to charge right in is not a good idea and can cost you a foul. The ideal conditions for a layup is when you're on a breakaway when it is 2 on 1 or 3 on 2 etc or if you are feeling confident enough to get to the hoop before the opposition.
Secondly
Footwork …show more content…
A layup is performed after dribbling or receiving a pass.
Either way you have to control the ball in two hands. To make things easier I will talk about the right handed layup (To do the left hand layup do everything I am about to tell you but in reverse). To start off you need to get close to the basket on the right hand side about where the bank is on the keyway. The bank being the bump on the keyway which is longer and wider than the rest of them. Then take a step with your right foot to get as close as possible to the hoop. Then once the left foot lands use it to jump up in the air. This should take about three seconds all together. Easy stuff
right?
Finally
Your shot.
It is the end of the race and hopefully comes with a reward of 2 points using the same side that you lifted your leg with you push the ball lightly upwards to the top corner of the small square of the backboard. If you're running at an angle and you pushed at the correct strength level the ball should go in and the sweet swoosh sound will ring in your ears.
If not go again as the layup will come with practice and practice and practice until it become second nature. As Michael Jordan said “I’ve failed over and over again in my life and that is why I have succeed”
So to sum it all up to achieve the perfect layup remember your P.F.S Positioning, Footwork and your shot. All three combined will produce the perfect layup with practise of course. So what are you waiting for? Get out and work on it
