As described in Chapter 4 of Reframing Organizations, Herbert Mintzberg developed a five-sector “logo” in order to categorize how organizations can be structured. Five specific structural types are pictured: simple structure, machine bureaucracy, professional bureaucracy, divisionalized form, and adhocracy.
1. Explain the role of each of the five components of Mintzberg’s “logo” (write your explanations using your own words – don’t simply copy the descriptions verbatim from the text or other source):
a. strategic apex. The board of directors and senior executives work at this level to develop strategic corporate goals, determine the organizational mission, and oversee operations at the global level. Through commands, rules, or regulations strategic managers continually try to develop a strategy. Within school systems, this would include the state director of education, district directors, superintendents and school boards. Within the military, it would be the commanding general and their senior staff. Bolman, L., & Deal, T. (2003).
b. techno structure is made up of analysts, specialists and technicians who analyze, inspect and measure system outputs and procedures and conduct internal control checks to validate standards. Techno structure functions are found in corporate accounting and quality assurance departments, internal review auditors in government, and safety specialists who ensure government safety standards are maintained within industry. Bolman, L., & Deal, T. (2003).
c. support staff perform tasks that support or facilitate the work of others within the organization. For example, an office receptionist within a realtor’s office, secretary to a legal firm, budget analyst within a comptroller division, nurse within a physician’s office or hospital, food service workers in a cafeteria, custodial crews within an office building, equipment mechanics within a factory maintenance shop or auto garage, engineer
