Leadership and Time Management
Nursing, a profession often referred to as “a calling” with numerous opportunities for advancement. Though this is genuine, not everybody has what it takes to be viable in administration, in spite of the fact that everybody can possibly be a leader. An appraisal of our own time management, in addition to inspecting our own authority speculations and breaking down the distinction between quality initiative and administrative abilities, healthcare professionals can decide their own mentoring capabilities and shortcomings.

management go as an inseparable unit. As per my self-appraisal data, I, as the vast majority am rather orderly. I view myself as exceptionally organized and others may refer to me as being OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). Personally, I feel being organized and attentive to detail is a requirement for being a skilled and thorough nurse. When one is not organized the risk of making a mistake or missing an intervention is much higher and could potentially cause harm to the patient.
Learned Concepts
Leadership Theory Speculations regarding leadership theories have transformed massively as the years have progressed.
The "Great Man Theory" which was a sexist perspective for the most part formerly imagined that with a detailed goal to be a sufficient leader, you must be a male and conceived with those qualities. As time passed, various distinctive hypotheses in regards to the characteristics of leaders have surfaced: Trait Theory, Behavioral Theory, Contingency Theory, and Contemporary Theory. For my personality and my qualities the Contemporary theory completes me the best. This theory is decisive based on the level of development the person has. Knowing an individual’s needs, objectives, participation, and ability are all components that a leader ought to know in turn of becoming a successful leader (Grossman & Valiga, 2013). I personally think it is important to not only be mindful of my expectations for the group, but to also be knowledgeable of the individual’s views and ambitions as …show more content…
well.
Leadership Style Transformational leaders comprehend what is essential and have the ability to discuss the significance to others keeping in mind the end goal to get set objectives accomplished. These leaders can inspire others to perform responsibilities exceeding their expectation (Grossman & Valiga, 2013). It is important to recognize and praise each individual for their success, which in turn will result in a productive unit. Transformational leadership establishes a sense of dignity in all, is a strong positive example, creates confidence and gives praise as a result of satisfaction for ones desired results (Grossman & Valiga, 2013).
Leadership versus Management
Often the term’s manager and leader are used interchangeably, while having two distinct meanings.
A positon in which one has authority is not a requirement for being a leader. A leader tends to be more engaging and easy to talk to. They are more likely to be motivators, declare values, and are relationship oriented (South University Online, 2014, para. 2). A leader must acquire particular qualities such as determining an objective, support others, influence as well as inspire (Romero, 2010, p. 4). According to Grossman & Valiga (2013) everyone has the potential of being a leader and should be thought of as a learned skill and not as a position (p. 4). A manager is more impersonal and consist of less emotional involvement. As stated by Sieloff & Ralph (2011) there are three behaviors such as respecting nurses, the profession, as well as the art and science of nursing in which a nurse manager should exhibit in order to be seen by others as a leader (p. 979). To put the wants of others before personal desires is an example of a good
leader.
Application of Concept
Suggestion for the Work Environment
Attitude and time management are two key components which should be consciously applied daily in the work place. Since completing the time management self- assessment, I find it to be a tool that could be beneficial in bringing awareness to those who could use improvement on their time management skills. Due to the lack of time management, there are nurses who require extending their scheduled shift in order to complete their nursing responsibilities which in turn is costly to the employer. Improving time management skills results in the nurse being more cost effective for the facility.
Conclusion
One must be conscious of their personal leadership style in order to be successful as a leader and/or manager. Every individual has the ability to become a leader. Whether a leader, a manager, or both, time management is an essential for the nursing profession. To deliver the best quality of care as a healthcare professional we all must strive to be a leader, bring positive energy, and be sensitive to our time.
