Essential Leadership Types

Typically, there are just three major leadership styles in management; such as participative leadership, autocratic leadership, and laissez faire leadership. Note that these different leadership styles are further divided into many other ones classified according to specific behaviors and leading techniques. In participative leadership style, the team manager is open for suggestions from his subordinates for deciding on a decision. The final decision rests on the leader himself though. In autocratic leadership style, the leader is solely responsible for the decision making process and does not involve team members for coming up with potential solutions. In the laissez faire leadership style, the leader leaves the work on the members, without dominating and interfering their method of working. Other subtypes of leadership are enlisted in the following:
Situational Leadership
Bureaucratic Leadership
Transactional Leadership
Transformational Leadership
Charismatic Leadership
Task-oriented Leadership
Relation-oriented Leadership
Servant Leadership
Now let us get to know some of the much needed leadership attributes.

Leadership Attributes and Skills

Decision Making: This is no doubt one of the most essential skills that is required for a leader. Though a leader should obtain advice from corporate peers and other managers, he has to be firm in whatever decision he makes.

Problem Solving: As in the aforementioned quote from Nelson Mandela, people will only consider you a good leader if you take the most prominent problem solving step in leading a team during an issue. A leader surely has to be tactful in solving professional problems at the workplace.

Effective Communication: No goal can ever be achieved without effective workplace communication in the team members, leader, and other related practices. A leader should be touch with the team members regarding the current status of the projects.

What is a leader? According to Kouzes and Posner, leadership is “the art of mobilizing others to want to struggle for a shared aspiration”, and indeed, these men go further to posit that leadership transcends a certain mode of behavior, rather, that it is an active set of skills and qualities that is clearly apparent. The laissez-faire style lacks direct supervision of employees and fails to provide regular feedback to those under their supervision. An autocratic leader generally makes decisions alone without the input of others. In the participative style, leadership values the input of team members and peers, but the responsibility of making the final decision rests with the manager. A transactional manager receives certain tasks to perform and provides rewards or punishments to team members based on performance results. The basic principle of leadership traits is something that separates the Marine Corps from not only other branches of the military but also every other organization in the world. The stress for every Marine to have the ability to be a leader and to take charge and do what they know is right allows the leadership to trust that everything that is supposed to be done will be done and done correctly without issue while the leadership can focus on more pressing issues. Furthermore it allows the Marines not yet in positions of power to be ready for when they are given responsibility. It also means that when Marines are met with a situation in which they do not have any leadership above them the Marine will have the ability to make good decisions and resolve any issues that they may encounter. Three of the most important leadership traits of the fourteen are initiative, dependability, and judgment.…
