Michael Jordan
When most people think of a leader, they think a of a war hero or a politician or something of that nature. However, sports figures can be a leaders too as the display many of the same characteristics. To some, athletes are merely playing a game while to others, basketball s more than just a game. This explain why Michael Jordan was such a global icon in the 90s. Jordan was said to be a leader in three main ways: as a player, as a champion, and as a global icon.
As a player Jordan was an incredible basketball player and athlete who accumulated several individual awards. As a champion, Jordan raised the level of play for his teammates and carried his team to many successful seasons, winning six championships in 8 years. As a global icon, Jordan charmed the world with incredible talent, hard work, charisma and competiveness.
While Jordan was in the league he won 5 MVP Awards, 2 Olympic gold medals, 10 scoring titles, a defensive player of the year award, 14 All-Star appearances, 2 Slam Dunk Contests and the Rookie of the Year Award. While all of these accolades are very impressive, what makes his a leader is the way he played with and carried his team. Jordan’s individual success made him into an example of what a leader brings to his team. Jordan would always raise his level of play when his team needed him most and he was known for his clutch performances in close games. One of the most prominent performances in sports history, The Flu Game, is a great example of how Jordan portrays leadership. In this game Jordan was very sick and was recommended not to play but he insisted because it was game 5 of the NBA playoffs. In this game, Jordan dropped 38 points and eleven assist. This just goes to show that even when he wasn’t best fit to play a game that he wasn’t going to let his team down. He knew he was a leader and he knew his team needed him. In all six-championship
