Leadership Reflection

Leadership is a very broad topic. However, to me the simplest definition I have of leadership is influencing others to achieve a common goal. There is more to leadership than just management. I believe leadership and management are two different things but work together to make a cohesive system or unit. Leadership warrants innovation and vision. Management is effectively and efficiently coordinating processes and resources. Management warrants control and knowledge of these processes and resources. I have been at TriHealth for 13 years. For 10 of those years I have held a management position. I started as a staff CT technologist; held the lead CT technologist position for 8 years; advanced to supervisor of CT and Radiology for 2 years; and 4 months ago was promoted to the position of Manager of Imaging at Bethesda North. Each position has had increasing duties and responsibilities. I oversaw 14 people in the lead position and currently have106 people reporting to me. One thing every position has required is the direction of others to get to a common objective. Along the way I have realized that leadership and management require a skill set that is much different than the skill set of a technologist. I always felt like I did good job of leading and managing but sometimes lacked something that could make me a great leader. My employment goal for the longest time was to become the manager of imaging. The reason I decided to go into the MSOL program was to make myself more marketable for that position. Soon after applying to the MSOL I was promoted to the manager position. It has become apparent to me in the last 4 months that there are aspects of leadership and finance that I lack. I am hoping this program will give me the tools to develop my leadership skills and contribute to my success in this position. Also, for me to advance to the administrator position I would need a masters degree. At this early stage of my current position I have not
