Different types of leaders exist in every work environment. Advantages and disadvantages exist within each leadership style. The organizations culture and goals determine which type of leader or leadership style work best for the company. Several different leadership styles can be used within an organization. This is dependent upon the different needs of the employees, the organization, and necessary tasks the organization needs to complete. Different types of leaders include autocratic, democratic or participative, and laissez-faire.
Types of Leaders Autocratic leaders, also known as authoritarian leaders are characterized by individual control over all decisions. They provide clear expectations for what needs to be done, when it should be done, and how it should be done. Little concern is shown to subordinates and input is rarely accept from them. Autocratic leadership involves absolute control over a group. Rules are rules, without exception. Democratic or participative leaders value the input and ideas of team members and view themselves as part of this team. Followers or employees are encouraged to be innovative and their problems and welfare are considered. Although considered part of the team, the responsibility of making the final decision rests with the participative leader after the discussion and input of employees. Laissez-Fair leadership is the hands off approach and is almost a contradiction in terms. The idea is to let everything run itself without direction from the leader. The leader exerts little or no supervision over the group. They delegate responsibility for the accomplishment of work objectives and decision making power to their employees.
