Preface
Anyone can be a leader, but to be a successful leader can be a real challenge. A leader needs to be able to draw on a vast array of skills and attributes and be able to apply them at the right time and in the right way. Above all a leader has to recognize that his/her success will ultimately depend on the people that he/she leads which means creating an environment in which all of these people can flourish. What does a leader need to do to create this environment? This book suggests that it depends to a great extent on the example set by the leader whose behavior sets the tone and creates the culture for a team or an organization People are influenced by example, good and bad, and the example set by any leader will have a significant impact on the long-term success, or otherwise, of their team or organization. Leading by example is not exactly rocket science. Many of the behaviors that are covered in this book require little more than behaving as a decent, considerate human being should behave towards others, combined with a clear vision and commitment to do the best that is possible. So whether you are a leader of a large organization employing thousands of people, a children’s sports coach or even a parent, there are ideas in this book that should help you to be more successful at what you do. * * *

To me, leadership is leading by example. My years in high school have shown me that the person who builds people up, and shows kindness is more of a leader than someone who commands and controls people. I strive to be this kind, caring person who others can look up to. As I grow older, I hope that by doing the right things, I can inspire others to do the same.…

There are plenty of people at work who talk a good game, but fail to back up their words with actions. Following through on your responsibilities and commitments is key to being a success in the workplace. However, “doing your job” is a given – it is the bare minimum that is expected of you by your employer and your colleagues. It goes without saying that you should act professionally, dress appropriately, be courteous, and responsive. However, to lead, you should be setting the standard, rather than following it. It is very easy to do what everyone else is doing – there is safety in numbers, and sticking your head above the parapet is usually a risky proposition. So, how do you lead by example?…

We need to know the importance of being a leader by example. If someone wants to be a real leader, that person has to show this characteristic. Bring people up in work areas, if someone's having a hard time encourage them, affect them in a positive way. I mean think Adolf Hitler had the leader traits, but he used those skills for negative doings. Do not just speak like a positive example, but also be a positive example by showing it, do the right thing when nobody's watching, when with friends do not let them trick anyone into…

In my opinion, leadership is more than just someone who can enlist the aid of others to accomplish a specific task. It is a characteristic and a lifestyle of a person. True leadership is not displayed on days we feel like it. It is a constant display of ones actions to accomplish tasks and set an example for others to emulate. A leader is someone who can be turned to in the absence of knowledge or direction and will either have the answer or know where to get the answer.…
