League of Nations Notes
In 1924 the Americans got involved and the Dawes plan was introduce. On the surface this was good, however it would create problems for Germany
In 1929 the young plan which eased the German reparations.
Things were improving for Germany; Wall Street crash triggered the great depressions.
Militarism and dictatorship was triggered.
In 1929 thing changes.
League of nations failed to prevent WWII from happening.
The League of Nation was noble and took risks, yes it did not achieve peace but it cannot be blamed completely.
Great Britain and France failed in enforcing the treaties signed in Paris.
Problem in 1920: Insure Germany would disarm.
In 1922 German allied with Russia to develop armament.
Danzing in Poland was99.9% German speaking.
Reasons for the failure of the League:
THE CONFRENCE OF AMABSADORS- crippled the League of Nations, took power from the League of nations.
Russian was not invited to take part in the peace conference.
Russia and Germany allied themselves.
The poles took advantage of the Russian civil war by invading the Ukraine.
German tried to exploit the divisions of the British and French.
The French wanted Poland to take control over Danzing while the British wanted the Germans to have it.
Invasion of the Ruhr:
It ended the French policy of trying to enforce the terms of the treaty by force.
In 1936 when Hitler rearmed the Rhineland, if the French had responded, Hitler would have fallen from power and humiliated. They did not act because they were criticized by the British and American response to their action in 1923
1924 the post war period was over.
The Dawes plan:
Germany would gradually pay more.
It was substitute by the young plan because Germany couldn’t pay
5.8 million Germanys were against the young plan.
The withdrawal of French and Belgium troops was a diplomatic failure for the French.
Collective security was completely dead in 1923 (Canadian amendment)
The Geneva protocol:
Opposed by the Britain’s.
The league would assist any country on the same continent.
The Locarno agreement was to solidify the borders.
