The author's decision to use the phrase “in company” twice in this passage reveals the need for so many contraptions in which it is a testament to the serious nature of death. Science may dehumanize the process, but it takes a whole lot of technology to do it. The author states, “Linda was dying in company- in company and with all the modern conveniences.” (pg.198).
The nurse reacts in a horrified way due to the fact that she was not accustomed to this kind of thing in visitors. For example, the nurse says “You mean, of her not dying? No of course there isn't. When somebody sent here, there's no..” “startled by the expression of distress on his pale face, she suddenly broke off” (pg.199). For instance, he states, “twins, twins ...Like maggots they had swarmed defilingly over the mystery of Linda's death. Maggots again, but larger, full grown, they now crawled across his grief and his repentance”(pg. 209). The effect of this figurative language on the meaning of the work as a whole is that it adds a different mood and tone to the chapter. Additionally, it makes the storyline come alive in the reader's mind.
John sees two Bokanovsky groups receiving their soma ration when he exits the lift in the hospital vestibule who comprise the menial staff of the hospital and are waiting to receive their daily soma. The Savage watches them line up to receive their ration and starts repeating the phrase "Oh brave new world" to himself. In which, he compares the Khaki mob to maggots. (pg. 209-210).
I think that John keeps repeating the phrase “O brave new world” for the reason that he's shocked by how wrong he was. His tone is now commanding from when he first arrived in the new world an quoted the phrase. He wants to change this new world. (pg.210).
John changes after Linda's death in the sense that a shutter had been opened. Linda had been a slave, Linda had died, and he realizes that a reparation a duty must be done.
