Lessing Vs Fromm
People are constantly on the lookout for groups to be a part of, and if they no longer are intact with that group they look for others to be a part of. Lessing states this in the beginning of her summary. We as humans feel that we need to be a part of a group, posse, click, crowd, etc.
The reason behind this is we grow up believing, and thinking what our guardians taught us what was right and what was wrong. Which there is not a problem with this but, how are we supposed to learn without exploring things for ourselves as individuals? Lessing states “When we are in a group, we tend to think as that group does: we may even have joined the group to find “like minded” people.” (Lessing 592) This is true; some people do not like to express their own thoughts or opinions. There usually is a leader and then many followers. Everyone has experienced this and knows how it goes.
Lessing writes “I certainly wouldn’t give in, I speak my mind. . . . ., but would you?” (Lessing 593). The way Lessing asks this bold question makes the readers ask themselves that question. I agree with Lessing when she states; “The majority in the group -- according to instruction – will assert sutbbornly There are indeed glorious individuals who stubbornly insist on telling the truth as they see it, but most give into the majority opinion, obey the atmosphere.” (Lessing 593). She is correct, most individuals will just “go with the flow” and wont speak up for themselves. While others will continue to be the leaders in the group and everything will go smoothly. Lessing explains an interesting fact that we all know is true, she talks about how there is that majority rules; when a small portion of the group (two or three people)

we have a deep, natural need to connect with other people and to belong to a social group. This sense of connection and belonging comes from good relationships with the people around us - in our families, at work or school and with our friends. There is strong evidence that when we feel we belong, we will flourish.…

Have you ever felt an innate desire to connect to another human being but you were inhibited by the expectation that you may be rejected by mainstream society. People often crave to belong to a group however; it can be fraught with difficulties. Both the film “My life as a house” and the novel “One flew over the Cuckoos nest” by Ken Kesey encapsulate the difficulties with belonging to a group as they are obscured by multiple barriers presented in the beginning.…

The society we now live in has become so immune to free thinking due to the explosion of technology and the mass media. We tend to just believe what we are told by those who run the media societies, or by those who are integrated in our own comfort zone. In The Allegory of the Cave, Plato says our “bonds prevent us from turning our heads around”. This quote can be taken many different ways, but I chose to read into this statement by emphasizing how people are so comfortable being the way it is that they are unwilling to step out and explore life and the world around them. People in today’s society have become lazy thinkers and would rather be told how to behave and what to believe rather than making these decisions on their own.…

She started her lecture by going over groups and talks specifically in a universal setting talking about Western philosophy and that we are living in a free society, existing as individuals and making individual choices. We as people live as groups. Family groups, working parters, and even church groups. Therefore, there is no was of making decisions that we truly believe in. There is always that thought in our head “well maybe, Jill would have done this instead…”. Lessing believes that resisting group pressure to maintain one’s individual opinion is very difficult and anyone has the tendency to act like everyone else in a group. Lessing believes that, we, the people, are “group animals” and have group mindsets when we interact with others in our families, at work, and in social, religious, and political groups. Without knowing it, we allow others opinions and actions to influence ours. When someone is isolated outside or a group, asserts that two pieces of wood are not equal in length, the group forces the individual to comply with them, and change their mind that maybe that piece of wood, is actually the same…

It is very easy to believe that our own way of doing thing is correct and anyone different is wrong or inferior. This is due to a lack of understanding of the unknown. When we start to understand more about the unknown it becomes the known and so is more acceptable to us. So by understanding and respecting the beliefs of others we can learn very much.…

People can change based on the personalities contained in a group. For example, if the personalities in a group are positive and supportive, then each person’s self-esteem is boosted up and he or she will speak his or her mind. However, if the personalities in a group are aggressive or assertive, then each person might be less willing to speak his or her mind and go along with the group. Not only that, but a typical person wouldn’t stand up for something alone. He/she would instead go with the majority of people. In a group of 100 people, each person with his/her opinion, at least 30 % of those 100 would stand up against everyone else.…

Or, to join a group in which we felt we found similarities or likes or dislikes. Children don’t think about what other people say about them, they just want to make friends and have fun. As we grow other, we start to realize what will make us more likable. We all want to be talked about nicely, we want others to feel like they can make a connection with them because we have a couple of things in common. In this article, Making Friends with Fear Series: Fear of Not Belonging, a women named Kylie Patchett, a mindset coach for women entrepreneurs, says “ Often, the fear of not belonging almost subdues part of ourselves – similar to what we were talking about in the first part”. This shows that we start changing our opinions, physical looks, our mentality to correspond to those around us. We fear that if we say what we actually mean, then other will think we are wrong and call us out on it or challenge…

Many people were getting access to electricity, allowing them to be able to use and enjoy the new technologies of the 1920’s. The major advances in technology that occurred in the 1920’s in America were responsible for significant changes in the lifestyle of the typical citizen. More than half of American households had electricity and were buying new technology. Electricity was available to many people, which meant that they could buy technology, like appliances and radios, which made chores easier and people got a news update faster, instead of having to wait for tomorrow’s paper. Technology was making new entertainment possible and was providing it to most people.…

What this means to say is that when a group of people are put together and one opinion is shared that seems okay then everyone in that group will jump on it and run with it. They will take that to mean that it is also their opinion without them having thought of it. So each person will not have formed their own opinion. They will just take what the other people say and think that it is right while not having their own opinion on why that…
