On the other hand, it is also a homosexuals human and moral rights. Every homosexual has the right to be jubilant in the same way that heterosexuals are. Each individual has their own morals, although some may not agree. A USC Aiken senior, Micah Hurtt, says, "Some people cannot separate the religious aspect. It is not a matter of religious right or wrong morals; it is inequality." Even though heterosexuals have different morals, homosexuals still have the right to be…
Students are feeling unsafe being themselves in their communities. 64% feel unsafe because of their sexual orientation. 44% feel unsafe because of gender orientation. 32% did not attend school for at least one day because they felt unsafe. 61% of students never reported the bullying attacks. These students were so afraid to tell an adult about what was going on, that they just let happen. Many lgbtq students have experienced bullying, comitted sucide, and have experienced physical harassment, and it needs to change.…
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community is a community based on celebrating individuality, sexuality, pride, diversity, love, and acceptance. Also known as the gay community, LGBT people believe in promoting LGBT rights and fighting for social justice. UCLA School of Law (Gates, 2011) conducted four national studies and two-state-level population based studies. The results determined that there are approximately nine million adults in the United States that identify themselves as LGBT. Prehistoric findings show that the community has been a target for discrimination and persecution from individuals and groups that practice homophobia since 11th century BCE. Although today’s century has proven to improve the…
We as a society have this false sense of reality that everyone is treated equal, but I often ponder if we are truly equal? Everyone in the world today fears what they cannot understand. People have this enormous cowardice of homosexuality. If we as a nation are looked upon as being righteous, then why do we treat same sex relationships unfairly? Nowadays, same sex relationships are a natural occurrence. Everywhere in today’s media it is very easy to hear and see about the events, news, and controversy surrounding the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and their right to marriage and adoption. Many people support the idea of equality for all regardless…
This article talks about the hate crimes that were directed toward the LGBT community in the early 1990’s. At this time people believed that being an homosexual was a bad thing to be an a disgrace to the world hurting the many people who were homosexual. Different from race, religion, ethnicity those who defined themselves as gay or lesbian were able to hide their sexuality and pass as straight, becoming a less easier target. This was a time for many homosexuals to hide their sexuality because hate crimes were rising and those who came out were being attacked. Many gays and lesbains found it hard to live their lives because of other people discriminating and acting violent towards them.…
Lawmakers, senators, and politicians have always targeted minority groups, time after time introducing bills and laws full of hate, and the LGBTQ community has countlessly fallen victim to these disgusting acts. The LGBTQ community has faced social inequalities since the beginning of time, from Hitler's attacks against homosexuals to homosexuality being considered a psychological disorder and a crime in the 1960’s. In 1953, President Dwight Eisenhower signed Executive Order 10450, banning homosexuals from working for the federal government or any of its private contractors. The Order lists homosexuals as security risks, along with alcoholics and neurotics. Despite the progressive steps the United States has taken to cease oppression, the…
Furthermore, homophobia leads to violent actions towards LGBT people. The media through movies shows that gays and lesbians are to be the victims of violence and this representation leads society to get physically aggressive with GLBT. With the rampant hate crimes against gays, some of which are legal in some parts of the world, the LGBT community is more likely to be victims of a violent crime. Violent crimes such asthe brutal murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998, who was tortured, beaten, bound, tied to a fence, and left to die in Laramie, Wyoming are painful reminders of hate crimes. His murderers, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, weren’t even charged with a hate crime because Wyoming didn’t have that as a possible charge at the time.…
According to The Leadership Conference, in 2007, the amount of hate crimes committed against homosexuals reached as high as 1,265, and they became the “third most frequent target of hate violence over the past decade.” In 2007, a man was fatally beaten outside of a bar in Greenville, South Carolina—he was openly gay. In 2008, a 28-year-old woman was raped by four men in Richmond, California—she was openly gay. Again, in 2008, a 15-year-old boy was shot twice in the head by a fellow classmate in Oxnard, California—he was openly gay. In all of those cases of hate crimes, offensive words were used to mock their homosexuality.…
The life of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning, also known as the LGBTQ community, is not easy. In general, life was not made to be easy for anyone, but there is always some factors out there that makes it much harder for some people. For example, coming out as a member of the LGBTQ community will cause someone’s life to never be the same due to discrimination. Although there are generous people out there who do no treat people any different, there will always be a group of individuals that will not agree with the lifestyle choices one makes. Due to the amount of hate towards the LGBTQ community, hate crimes have become more extreme as the years have passed. The LGBTQ community deals with hate, harassment and violence in…
In this paper I am talking about Hate crimes against the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. I show that though Hate crimes are classified as crimes that are evoked by sexual orientation, race, identity, gender, or religion. Hate crimes are more common amongst the gay and transgender men. I show states with highest conviction rate in 2012. I also show the upward incline in numbers since 2005 until now. I offer explanations as to who commits these crimes and why. Lastly I show the progression of time and how prejudice and hate crimes although upward in numbers are really being accepted in our communities.…
The challenges that the LGBT population face are neither new nor surprising but the need to address them is certainly relevant (Thiel, 2010). In fact, it appears that for as much progress that has been made on some campuses, there has been no progress on others. The presence of violence and harassment, as well as the desire for inclusion and justice, indicates the need for attention and research as a chilly campus climate can make for a distressing experience for LGBT students, faculty, and staff.…
In Anoka, Minnesota, the suburb school district had a culturally and nationally controversial war, how homosexuality must be treated. Six kids were seriously bullied because of their bisexual attitude and most of the kids have thought of suicide. The advocates of gay students try to fix things in a right way but Christian parents who dominated that area for decades are going against the idea of defending them, because of ideological influence their kids might get. Their supporting claims are the school is not really teaching kids about homosexual and only try to hide away the victims from bulling. I personally do agree with them because of following reasons.…
I began questioning my sexuality in seventh grade. I had just been given my first phone and suddenly a whole new world opened up to me. The LGBTQ+ community welcomed me with open arms as I read up on labels and identities, and I soon discovered that I’m bisexual. However, this “whole new world” also exposed me to bigotry, hate, and ignorance. Very quickly, I learned that people like me aren’t entirely accepted or respected. From hearing “f*ggot” and “gay” thrown around in classes to my friend’s negative reaction after coming out to her, I felt hopeless, disgusting, and alone. Before I knew it, eighth grade was starting, along with Homecoming and the high school’s parade. I remember sitting on the curb watching the clubs and organizations pass…
Without the influences of society, any area of discrimination that the community faces is non-existant. Due to these social influences, the transgender community is forced to deal with violence and sexualization, based on a lack of understanding in the outside community. In 2016, at least 21 transgender women of color lost their lives due to the massive amounts of hate revolving around the community. In the Human Rights Campaign's (HRC) study of violence towards the trans community, they describe how ``victimes were killed with guns, knives, blunt instruments and bare hands-by lovers, acquaintances, family members, strangers and even groups'' \cite[5]{HRC-2016}. Statistically speaking, the transgender community is the most at-risk community for being assaulted, raped or murdered, and the number only increases as you add classifications. It is one case to be transgender but if the individual is a transgender woman, the likely hood of them being a victim of hate crimes increases. Then it increases even more if they are a transgender woman of color. The violence faced by the transgender community is repulsive when looking at numbers, but that is not the only area in society were the communnity is met with discrimination. With the surge of the recent feminist movements, came groups with the intention to purposefully…
Bullying-related suicide is currently the third largest death cause among kids and teenagers in The United States; these suicides are up to three times more likely among GLBT kids. Unfortunately, these numbers tend to increase if federal government does not take action. But how can a country that has influential leaders talking down on homosexuals, does not provide equal rights for GLBT citizens, and does not allow openly gay Americans to serve their nation in the military – “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy –, tell kids that they should tolerate and respect all sexual orientations? It is likely that these kids won’t. As long as the government doesn’t upgrade policies and laws that keep GLBT people as second-class citizens, anti-gay bullying will continue to happen. Kids need the grown-up society around them to demonstrate ethical treatment of everyone, so they can do it too.…
