This article serves as an appropriate outline to some phases in the history of the US lesbian and gay political history. Also, this shows concepts which are necessary to the evolution of any political movement, but displays these concepts through the lesbian and gay movements. The article challenged me to understand the weaknesses and strengths of the movements, and discover why some worked and why some did not.…
But at three local high schools here this fall, dozens of gay students and their supporters finally convened the first Gay-Straight Alliances in the history of this conservative, largely Mormon city. It was a turning point here and for the state, where administrators, teachers and even the Legislature have tried for years to block support groups for gay youths, calling them everything from inappropriate to immoral.…

For years gay and lesbian organizations have always had a hard fight for equal rights in the United States, Texas is without an exception. Recent law amendments to the state constitution have upturned the “Anti-sodomy statute, Chapter 21, Sec. 21.06 of the Texas Penal Code made it Class C misdemeanor to engage in deviant sexual intercourse with the same sex” and brought the State back in line with the Supreme Court Ruling equal rights for everyone. The current problem now facing Texas is about repealing the outdated state amendments and Texas Health Code to reflect the changes and helping government employees stay informed of those changes.…

The proposed prevention program will address discrimination projected at youth’s who identify with being gay or lesbian in their communities. When discrimination occurs in the community, it produces stress, physical and psychological issues. Lewis, Delega, Clarke, & Kuang (2006) article addressed how discrimination of one’s sexual identity is stigmatization toward their social status. Discrimination of gay or lesbian youth can also produce substance use problems, suicidal acts, violent victimization along with risky sexual behaviors that put them at risk for HIV infection, and significant rates of school dropout (Keuroghlian, Shtasel, & Bassuk, 2014).…
There are two broad techniques used to provide sex education, comprehensive sex education and abstinence based sex education (Mezey, 2011). The abstinence-based avenue explains to children that it is morally wrong to have sex prior to a heterosexual marriage, which leads to many problems such as higher rates of unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and a lack of knowledge on all subjects related to sex and healthy relationships (2011). This is especially true amongst LGBTQIA+ and people with disabilities because they are left to find out sex and sexually related experiences through trial and error, and the Internet. Comprehensive sex education on the other hand, is when students are presented with every possible contraceptive option, their benefits and risks, statistical safety from preventing pregnancy and STDs/STIs (2011). Students also learn about what a healthy relationship is and how to effectively communicate their wants, needs, and limits in a sexual relationship. Comprehensive sex education is essential for students to grow into functioning adults, and thus participating members of a democracy (2011). Historically, sex education was not viewed as a necessary aspect for students until the 1960s and the demand for evidence-based education began in 1964. During this time period, Planned Parenthood established the Sexuality Information Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) to effectively education the younger population on sex and sexuality (2011). SIECUS founded the National Guidelines Task Force in 1990 who’s mission was to make sex education a promotion of sexual health and providing a positive view on sex, in comparison to the immoral view that abstinence-based sex education provided…
Today more than ever companies are changing the way gays, lesbians, and transgender individuals are treated in the work place. Companies are adopting non-discriminating policies, starting to give more benefits and other practices that include GLBT in the workplace. In 2002, the first Human Rights Campaign Foundation Corporate Equality Index rated employers strictly on seven criteria, which remain the basis for today’s rating system. The original criteria were guided in part by the Equality Principles, 10 touch points for businesses demonstrating their commitment to equal treatment of employees, consumers and investors, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.…

In a joint statement released yesterday, the groups said that they are deeply concerned about publicly funded sexuality education programs that restrict students' access to information and limit learning to one approved message about human sexuality. Students should be allowed to make up their own minds about whether to remain virgin, whether to engage in sexual promiscuity, whether to follow parental advice or not, and countless other issues…
Alternating from one form of speech to another has always been a struggle for me. Oftentimes what is considered acceptable within my main circle of friends is received as a personal attack on my subgroup of friends. The majority of my friends throughout middle and high school is primarily composed of members of the LGBTQ or LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual or Agender) community. Since nearly everyone in our group does not identify as heterosexual, members of our group rarely ventured out of their comfort zones. Over the years, we constructed a safe space for ourselves and within our secure community we expressed ourselves through the slang we absorbed from neighboring LGBTQ groups. Although the language I practice with my friends is universally accepted within the LGBTQ community, the language we use to communicate with each other is naturally loaded with…
The challenges that the LGBT population face are neither new nor surprising but the need to address them is certainly relevant (Thiel, 2010). In fact, it appears that for as much progress that has been made on some campuses, there has been no progress on others. The presence of violence and harassment, as well as the desire for inclusion and justice, indicates the need for attention and research as a chilly campus climate can make for a distressing experience for LGBT students, faculty, and staff.…
Thesis Statement: The Gay Rights Movement dates back to the 19th century. By 1970 gay and lesbian organizations existed all over the United States and in other countries all over the world. Some supporters of the movement would say that our society as a whole has made great strides towards acceptance of homosexuality. However, gays and lesbians are still fighting for equality in 2009. The issues are vast and widespread, with same-sex marriage at the top of the list. In the world that we live in today one might be surprised to learn how many countries are accepting of gay and lesbians, as well as how many are not. The world has made progress within the last decade regarding this issue, but definitely not enough. We need to take steps to protect and balance Gay rights.…
