Film Questions

Name:______________________

What are your first impression of Trevor and his teacher Eugene? What personal qualities do they demonstrate in the film that show they believe in the beneficial powers of helping out and caring? My first impression of Trevor was that he was lost soul who lived in the shadows of his parents demons (especially his mother). Mr. Eugene seemed to be a man with a very kind soul and really wants to get his kids thinking about how they can subtly make the world a better place, but he's also struggling with his tragic past. They are both very compassionate, but Trevor seems to posess a little more childish fearless compassion.

How would you answer these questions that Eugene poses to his class on the first day of school: What does the world mean to you? How often do you think about things that happen outside this town? What does the world expect of you? Is the ideal of "interacting with the world," as Eugene describes Trevor's project, something you were taught as a child? Is service emphasized in your family, in your neighborhood, and in your religious community? What obstacles have gotten in the way of your heeding the call of the caring impulse within you?

The world is where I eat, breath, sleep, learn, interact with others and I want nothing more than to preserve its beauty and well being. Alas I am only one person and it takes cooperative effort to keep this world from drowning in a sea of social sin. I think a lot about what goes on outside my community because I choose to know what's going on, because sometimes what goesn beyond my white picket fences could possibly affect me. Yes I was definately taught by parents as a child to be in touch with the world because various family members lived around the world. In my community, community service is very much emphasized because there are many female empowerment programs like pageants and youth centers. The only I have when tackling these

Mr. Holland’s role: plays four roles in his everyday life. These roles are musician, teacher, father, and husband. Like anyone, Mr. Holland was both successful and unsuccessful at each of these roles. As a musician, he is a very good pianist who can compose good music quickly, a good skill to have to be a famous musician. As a teacher, in the beginning of the movie he really didn't want to pursue a career as a teacher, but in the end that is the only thing he wanted to do. As a teacher he is very successful overall as he starts the school marching band, and he directed it and in this way he really teaches his students to appreciate music. As a father, he is not very successful at all at being a father. Often he chooses his school over spending time with his son and he blows up at Cole when he can't understand what he is signing, therefore unsuccessful. However, when his son addressed him that he wasn't being a good father, he at least tried for a while to be a better one. Overall this to me would have to be his most unsuccessful role. And last but not least, as a husband he loves his wife Iris. He is somewhat successful at…

I have always cherished the value of service and its effects on communities. A school class that I take that promotes service is Student Senate. A requirement for that class is ten hours of community service per trimester, and I have been a part of this group since sophomore year. This class is all about improving our school and creating an enjoyable environment for our students to be in. An example of this would be when I helped decorate the halls during themed weeks such as Spirit Week and Winterfest along with my fellow classmates.…

I think that these events foreshadowed Okonkwo’s and the Ibo tribe’s demise because every single one of the events affected Okonkwo negatively and led to some of change in his life. It starts with Okonkwo’s father being a bum in the tribe and neglecting his responsibility to his family. His death was also degrading because his body was thrown in the forbidden forest and Okonkwo always worked towards not becoming someone like him. However, at the end Okonkwo’s “burial” is the same and he becomes the failure he tried to avoid. He considered himself a failure because he was unable to rid the tribe of the colonists because he could see that the culture was diminishing but he failed to bring the tribe to fight after his exile. He was exiled because he killed a boy at the wedding which he was invited to after he killed Ikemefuna so that he could clear his mind with a distraction. Overall, every event led to something which foreshadowed Okonkwo’s demise as well as the tribe’s.…

Since a young age, I have been exposed to the beliefs of trying to make a difference in the world through my mother's teachings. In 1989, my mother came from the Fiji Islands to America, seeking more opportunities. She took on low paying jobs to make ends meet, never giving up on her dreams of living in America. Since my childhood, she has always taught me the importance of being kind, generous, and playing an active role in the community. And after visiting my family in Fiji, I saw first hand what it meant to have those qualities—the kindness, generosity, and outgoing nature of the village. They also showed what it meant to be a part of a community by working together, farming the land, and cutting sugar cane to earn a living. Through my…

I want to start off by saying that conducting this service learning project was a wonderful experience that allowed me to encounter an entirely different aspect of the local Deland community. I very much enjoyed being able to interact with the children at Pathways’ Deland Head Start location and teach them a lesson about personal hygiene. Speaking on matters of personal health habits that allow you to lead a healthier and happier life is something I am very passionate about. Throughout the development of the service learning project and designing a lesson plan for the children, I wanted to create an interactive curriculum they would enjoy, and be able to remember the skills we taught them regarding how to best…

My life philosophy has always been to impact the world and help people. Growing up in Haiti where more than half of the population live in extreme poverty and two out of three Haitians lives on less than US$2 per day according to the world food programme, I quickly realized how the people around me and my friends didn’t have the opportunity that I had in order to reach their potential and achieve their dream. Attending school, having a meal where many of the opportunities that many people were deprived of in Haiti. Extreme poverty is one of the biggest factor in Haiti that affect so many people, and having seen how it directly affect many of them made me realize how grateful and thankful that I am to have been able to grow in a secure, safe,…
