In John Santrock's, Life Span Development, “An increasing number of studies reach the conclusion that children are at risk for health problems when they live in homes in which a parent smoke” (Santrock 2013p. 215). Both of Isabel’s parents are smokers which could have had an influence on her recurrent OM’s. Her mother’s concern was Isabel’s behavior and development therefore she did not know her frequent OM’s were affecting her hearing and more than likely did not know her smoking was a potential factor to her daughters OM’s. Isabel’s impaired hearing can greatly affect her social life and verbal skills. According to C.J. Lonigan’s Research in the Role of Otitis Media in the Development of Expressive Language Disorder, “ Articulation and phonological skills have also been associated with a child’s history of otitis media.” At two years old Isabel should be able to speak about two hundred words and uttering two word utterances (Santrock p. 168). Isabel’s babbling is not understandable, she is already behind in her language development. Language is an important part of communication. In Santrock’s life span development, it mentions, “Michael Tomansello stresses that young children are intensely interested in their social world and that early in their development they can understand the intentions of other people.” Isabel’s communication skills are not developed and is a barrier in her current developmental stage. She spends most of her time with her mother and because it is different to gain her attention, she is not able to engage in conversation with her mother, which is very critical at this age. Children learn language by mimicking sounds they hear, specifically from their
