After reading the chapter 6 “Harry and Rosemary Wong on the first thing you should teach” along with watching Wong video, I found his information insightful and intriguing as Wong has an unique way of providing the information to teacher which allows them to think about what they have been doing in their classroom to be effective in their management. Wong made a couple of statements that I took note for future references, but the ones that stuck out the most where “Effective teacher have a plan, If you don’t have a plan, then you are planning to fail.” Let’s think about that statement, we as teachers automatically believe we are effective teachers as we develop a lesson plan for our classrooms to which our students will engage in the curriculum.…

It shows how the teachers interact with students, and how students react with the teachers. In that meager setting at Oakcity High School with Mr. Bartlett, he doesn’t cater to students needs. He does things in a strict basic formatted setting because “...on any job they get outside of school, there’s going to be a certain formats they must follow to be successful on the job. McDonald’s, there’s a certain way of frying French fries. There’s a certain was of customer service. They have to learn that format”.(pg. 661) He feels as though his students are unable to comprehend those in depth discussions. He teaches basic ideals and principals, then tests students on them. He also feels that all of his students are “somewhat on the same level”(pg. 661). His basic teaching format of “read a section, complete the section handout, take section quiz, repeat daily for five days, take chapter test Friday”(pg. 662) is completely unacceptable and demoralizes students. Blue’s class she reminded them of the Bill Nye video that they had watch, and the kids remember lots of things from the video. This was a great way to get the students engaged and to help with a visual representation. She also gave each of them a chance to explain their reason and definitions with the whole class. She kept the students engaged by having them all take turns reading and highlight as they went along. Her role was to present questions for the students, who were to think about the answer and then share with one another. It was a good idea to spilt the students in to partners to discuss. In Mr. G’s he explained that the students had only been giving him work that was about fifty percent effort. He did allow for students to take out there phone and take pictures of the board to make sure they had the information. They also were very good at reading along with him and answering his questions out of the book. I think it was a good idea to get the students more engaged in the learning process, by working in smaller groups together. When a student would misbehave the mentor teacher would say to the student e.g. “Emma, that’s not how we behave in this classroom”! “How do we behave in this classroom?” the student would then have to reiterate the class rules to the teacher and then the problem would be resolved instantly. Other surrounding students are able to take that on board.…

Comparing Mr.K’s methods with the latest findings in fields from music to math to medicine leads to a single , startling conclusion: It’s time to revive old-fashioned education. Not just old-fashioned in the sense that so many of us as kids, with strict discipline and unyielding demands. Because here’s the thing: It works.” (Lipman 6). In addition, this shows how effective a hard going teacher can be. Furthermore, many benefited from the old way of showing “constructive criticism”. An example of students benefiting is when Lipman writes herself, “Psychologist K. Anders Ericsson gained fame for his research showing that true expertise requires 10,000 hours of practice, a notion popularized by Malcolm Gladwell in his book “Outliers”. But an often-overlooked finding from the study is equally important: True expertise requires teachers who give “constructive, even painful, feedback,” as Dr.Ericsson put in a 2007 Harvard Business Review article. He assessed research on top performers in fields ranging from violin performance to surgery to computer programming to chess. And he found that all of them “deliberately picked unsentimental coaches who would challenge them and drive them to higher levels of performance.” (Lipman 10). Maya Angelou once said “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” While Angelou was not simply talking about teacher and student relationships, I think that this quote follows my philosophy on classroom management very closely. I believe that as a teacher, it is crucial to have a system of positive motivation in the classroom. There are two main parts to my classroom management philosophy, one that clearly shows how discipline works in my classroom, and the other that clearly shows how everything else will work in the classroom interpersonally.
