Lords of Discipline
1. I hesitate to use the word power because very few people actually wield power, most simply have authority, which is given to them by those with the power. Generally speaking, in my experience with the authority of upperclassmen in the corps has been positive, they use their authority to accomplish the tasks they are responsible for. Authority and Responsibility go hand in hand as one increases the other increases at the same rate. My personal relationship with authority is one where I have been able to view those who wield their authority well or poorly.
2. Everyone suffers as a freshman. Unproductive upperclassmen take this experience and attempt to get revenge for their experience by unjustly punishing their charges. A good and just upperclassman takes his experiences as a freshman and shaping their leadership off of hard but fair role models.
3. Bobby Bentley was a freshman who was unable to control his bladder when being reamed by upperclassmen. His buddies abandoned him at one point and refused to help him through the hard parts of the year. However, in a final act of solidarity when Bentley soiled his pants, his peers soiled their pants as well. This was the last time anyone ever saw Bentley.
4. Will’s great teacher theory revolves around teachers inspiring and challenging him. Will has an inspiring relationship with Col. Reynolds. Col. Reynolds challenges Will and makes sure Will doesn’t slack off too much. I have a very similar relationship with a mentor, in fact Col. Reynolds reminds me of my mentor in a lot of ways.
5. Will sees himself in Pearce and empathizes with him.
6. I don’t know any upperclassmen well and would not even consider relaxing around them.

Before this course, my conception of the roles military officers in society and government had was that they were distinct individuals of a higher moral and ethical caliber. With these values came a voluntary but clear support of their chain of command and mission to defend the citizens of the United States of America. Prior to attending West Point, I observed an awkward separation between members of the armed forced and civilians due to lack of knowledge and familiarity of both worlds. Therefore, while I was aware that…

Author Keith M. Parsons’s purpose was to briefly summarize the differences between high school and college to his future students. Parson begins his article by stating a few things that will guide you into becoming a successful student. He first wants to explain the difference between a teacher and a professor, “Teachers are evaluated on the basis of learning outcomes, generally as measure by standardized tests. If you don’t learn, then your teacher is blamed. However, things are very different for a university professor. It is no part of my job to make you learn. At university, learning is your job and yours alone. My job is to lead you to the fountain of knowledge. Whether you drink deeply or only gargle is entirely up to you”. (Parson, 1)…

Being in charge of soldiers is a subject that is known oh so very well. In this situation I would feel as if an AAR on my leadership would be necessary. An AAR is an after action review which is a simple option for facilitating anything that has been done even leadership. It works by bringing together a team to discuss a task, event, activity or project, in an open and honest fashion. After an AAR has been completed I would be able to implement the changes that they would request for me to make and see if my workers become more responsive to me. I feel personal power is the most important type simply because Personal Power is internal to you. It is the skill set that earned you that important job title or rank, it is the knowledge you gained studying and training hard to meet all the requirements to fulfill your position. It is the ability to stay cool under pressure, it is the can do mindset. It is having outstanding character, resilience, persistence, patience, and intelligence. Because these things are internal to you, they cannot be taken away from you. Positional power is the act of using the title given to get things done. It is a Squad leader that has 15 soldiers underneath him that he still has to make do things. When you use personal power to get things done the soldiers will be willing and you won’t have to make them do anything. I just faced this situation recently where a SM ranked higher than myself tried to use his rank and position to do things that did not meet regulations. I kept an open mind and simply told him what could be done and his alternatives.…

It is known amongst the student body that these are the students who are rewarded for their academic achievements. These are the students who are given incentives and rewarded with the pizza parties, field trips, recognition, etc. This can cause a rift between students in lower level classes and their teachers. It also causes a barrier between the lower level student and their eagerness to learn and put forth maximum effort. It may give them the mentality that if they aren’t going to be recognized and rewarded as students in honors or AP classes, then why…

What does it mean to have power? Well to me power is have some small or large portion of power over others. When we think about power today we think of someone that is running a country or owning a company, but when we think of somebody having power it could be having nuclear codes or even making a choice that can change the path of a sports game or a class grade. When I asked my brother Richard Roberts an ex-soldier and a college student he said this “Power and integrity are typically considered to be antonyms today. Largely because people typically acquire power through less than ethical means.” The impact that a lot of power can have on an individual is sometime good sometimes bad based on the individual sometimes can be bad because the…

    Summer

After my first week of the Summer Bridge Program at Penn St-Abington, I learned a lot about the differences between high school and college. I really understand in high school that you must be there during the allotted hours, success rides on the teacher, and that we can get away from not reading the text for class and in college you have more freedom, harder courses, and longer hours of studying. We learned how to become an efficient and effective learner. What I learned from that lesson is that, I have to focus much more and study much harder then what I did in high school. Also that college is no joke since it’s a privilege and that high school is a right that we have to go. To me the most effective strategy I learned is how to become a better listener and how to be a successful student in college. The way I’m going to be a better listener is by using study strategies, note taking strategies and go to a tutoring center if I have trouble. What I learned so far relates to the present is that some strategies I never used or thought about. In the future, I’m going to use tutoring center or use the professor’s office time for any question I don’t understand. In conclusion, I learned so far is going to change the way I look at college. I understand now that college is no place to mess around. It’s a place where you chose what you want to do in the long…
