In 1987, The National Board of Certified Teachers (NBCTs) created a policy of the vision of accomplished teaching that they had. NBCTs also created The Five Core Propositions to “form the foundation and frame the rich amalgam of knowledge, skills, dispositions, and beliefs.” The Five Core Propositions are: teachers are committed to their students and their learning, teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to the students, teachers are responsible for monitoring and managing student learning, teachers should think systematically about their practice and learn from experience, and teachers are members of a learning community. All five of these propositions outline what every teacher should know and be able to do. Here is a visual organizer comparing the framework of lesson planning to the…
Educational research contributes many factors to effective teaching and the effective teacher. Beliefs and values that guide the research change by the decade, however, most of the research agrees that the highest impact on achievement is the teacher. The writer feels that the three factors Marzano pinpoints are ones truly necessary to guide effective teachers. He states “the act of teaching is a holistic endeavor. Effective teachers employ effective instructional strategies, classroom management techniques, and classroom curricular design in a fluent, seamless fashion”. (Marzano, p.77) By combining these three key components, the teacher will do what is necessary to foster student achievement.…
As it demonstrated in the Harry Wong video, there are three characteristics of an effective teacher. The three stages were shown during the beginning of the video and the first one is that the teacher is a good classroom manager, two the teacher designs lessons to reach mastery, and lastly the teacher has positive expectations that students will be…
These ideas stress upon staying positive, believing in one’s ability and trusting and nurturing the teachers to be their best. The book has a very simplistic approach and identifies that some of the concepts and ideas are repetitive, which stresses upon the fact that “repetition is the best teacher”. I believe that this can be vapid for some of the readers, but the clever use of acronyms; insights from other administrators, etc has made up for the minor lull in the reading. Examples from real situations would have definitely added to the flavor of the book and enhanced the reading experience, making it much more convenient to relate to the content and…
Harry Wong’s video on becoming an effective teacher helped me get pointers on things I didn’t know were so important. He presents problems that are easily solved by his terrific methods. Although being a very funny guy, Harry Wong is obviously very passionate about making us effective teachers. Harry Wong makes very valid points about effectiveness in the classroom and a new road to teaching.…
A classroom is a very dynamic and spontaneous place. Every classroom is comprised of a diverse combination of individuals who all contribute to the unpredictable nature and uniqueness of the class. The reality that no two students are alike and no two classes are ever alike, contributes greatly to the difficulty of establishing a realistic and effective classroom management plan. It is important that teachers realize that a classroom is an unpredictable place and that it is much more reasonable to strive to manage their classroom as opposed to trying to control it. I see my role as a managing teacher as guiding my students through their learning as they explore and discover what works best for them, instead of dictating how they will do things. It is also important that teachers are aware of the great number of theories that exist in regards to classroom and more specifically, behaviour management. I believe that it is detrimental for a teacher to adopt one philosophy without ever considering the numerous other possibilities. In my opinion all of the theorists have a number of positive ideas that can be introduced into the classroom in order to create an optimal learning environment. In developing my philosophy on teaching and learning I have incorporated the philosophies of Jones, Rogers and Gootman.…
Wong’s classroom management theory is based in believing that students misbehave because the classroom is unorganized and classroom rules are not clear. Wong’s theories depend on the teacher first setting up the classroom and running it from the first day letting students know what is acceptable or unacceptable. This theory is generally used in elementary levels as most teachers in the upper grades find that it is impractical for daily use for older students. Some teachers believe that it is very helpful in the high school level and that it should be utilized at least partially. (Charles, 2010)…
Jim Peterson was beginning his student teaching experience. He is teaching in an eight week summer program for students with disabilities. Jim has limited teaching experience and is excited about the possibility of getting his first teaching job. He has had experience working with a diverse population, specifically with students with emotional disabilities as a residential counselor and teacher’s aide. Jim considers himself to be “laid back” and easy to get along with. Jim’s believes that the key to effective classroom management is a relevant curriculum that addresses his…
A highly developed classroom management plan is so important to the success of the teacher and his or her students. An effective classroom management plan should help promote students ability to learn in the classroom. To have an effective classroom management plan there are many things that should be considered when setting a plan up. First there should be a theory or base to the plan. Second there needs to be specifics about the management plan. The specifics should be the desired behavior, rules of behavior and prevention of any misbehavior in the classroom. The last thing that an effective management plan should have is communication. The teacher should be able to communicate effectively the classroom management plan that they want their students to follow. Following these ideas, I am going to describe how I want my personal classroom to be run one day. I want my classroom to be a positive learning environment for students and one where students can gain personal growth. I want to be able to impact a student’s life and give them a foundation that they can build upon as they grow older in their academic endeavor. To do this having an…

I think it is best to use a combination of various approaches when setting a classroom management plan. I think it is important that educators understand that one must be proactive and not reactive against the students. This class has broadened my knowledge of classroom strategies that will help me become an effective teacher.…
I really learned a great deal from this article due to the real life case studies representing a variety of different teachers and how the author was able to help them. The real world examples gave me plenty to think about from the standpoint of a curriculum developer. The first case study was about someone who requested support that had good classroom management so the focus was on helping someone that is already doing an excellent job to become even better. I was impressed by how Hernett-Edwards took the teacher’s strengths and from that made a plan with two easy to try and low risk goals.…
