Literature has been influenced by a lot of things but the most important one is the influence literature has been socially.
In “Suicide Note” by Janice Mirikitani, In the time this poem was written the 80’s were almost over and the 90’s were coming. A lot of the young people around that time had a tough time and the parents were more focused on this perfect family and perfect children rather than the well being of their kids. A young girl commits suicide and leaves a note on why she ended her life. In the note she talks all about how she is just not good enough, not pretty enough and not smart enough and didn’t get high grades in school.
From that note you can tell that her parents probably cared about her grades
and a lot of other things then their own daughters well being. The social condition that this poor girl lived in were so harsh that this could have led to her death.
Another example is in “ Living in Sin” by Adrienne Rich, This poem was written in the most misogynistic time. Women weren’t listened to and their problems were written off as “Oh she’s a woman.” So in this poem it’s all about an unmarried couple living together. The woman imagines her studio to be really pretty, nice and clean. In reality it’s run down and just plain ugly and there needs to be a lot of cleaning. The man in the relationship just acts so bored and leaves to go do something. Later the woman feels kind of better but just thinks what tomorrow will bring.
The woman needs help and you can tell she’s not that happy with the situation that the two of them are at and the man in the relationship just doesn’t care and has no interest at all in helping her with the problem.
If he would just take time out of his day to help, it would make things a lot better for the both of them.
In my last example it’s in “We Wear The Mask” by Paul Laurence Dunbar, It’s not socially acceptable to put our problems out in the open so we all just hide it and In this poem Dunbar talks about how we wear masks to hide our true feelings. We all have this pain that we’re trying to cover up, to make us seem as happy as can be when in reality we’re miserable.
This social condition is bad, but true. You never really know what someone is going through. We all have things going on. Good or bad and it haunts us. Acting like we’re happy just makes everything a little easier.
That’s why it is very important to be nice to everyone because you never know what someone is going through. Just one act or one word of kindness could open the doors and be someones’s light.
In “Suicide Note” if her parents had told her just once that they were proud of her or that she’s beautiful she might’ve not killed herself.
In “Living In Sin” if the man in the relationship had just helped a little with her or even acted like he cared things could probably go well with the two and she wouldn’t doubt and he wouldn’t be bored. The author
