By 1918, children were required by law to receive an education in all states.

In the current society the system has undergone a change through decreasing educator authority, allowing students more control. The family structure has seen a similar change in authority. In 1852, Massachusetts was the first state in the, United States of America to enact a compulsory education law. This law required every city and town in Massachusetts to offer primary school focusing on grammar and basic arithmetic to be mandatory for children to attend. Prior to this law, states only offered private schools run by the catholic churches and since these schools charged tuition, it made it difficult for children with poorer background to receive a full education. This would eventually change during the immigration boom during 19th and 20th centuries and lead to other states to enact the compulsory education law. More subjects since have been added to schools and have been mandatory…

Major changes have been occurring in the everyday lives of families over the last generation. Elkind discussed a shift from the modern time period in the 1940’s to early 1960’s, to the post modern time period from the 1960’s to the present. He reports that schools begin to mirror the changes in society and families. Parent involvement in schools brought about changes; for example, the Disability Act requires schools to meet the needs for all students. Also, full day kindergarten classes were developed because the majority of mothers of young children worked and needed childcare. Halpern believes that despite these changes in family structures, the world of work is still organized for a family that has a stay-at-home caregiver. However, Halpern states that the curriculum in schools has become more advanced and supports different viewpoints in a multicultural world. Elkind suggests that postmodern schools must incorporate different teaching styles and cultural views to meet the needs of children from all ethnic groups. He states that schools have realized that all children do not progress at the same rate and that learning is more complex for today’s students. However, Elkind believed that the curriculum is being pushed down and more demands are placed on younger learners. Vygotsky also believed that development occurs through a socially mediated process that is culture specific, and that by looking at the culture, educators can better understand the student. Parent and community involvement is crucial for the success of postmodern schools.…

Secondary school. The eleven-year school term is split into elementary (grades 1-4), middle (grades 5-9) and senior (grades 10-11). Compulsory Basic Education lasts for nine years. Graduates of this level may continue their education at senior high school to receive secondary general education. They may also enter an initial vocational school or non-university level higher education institutions. Children are accepted to first grade at the age of 6 or 7, depending on individual development of each child. Children of elementary classes are normally separated from other classes within their own floor of a school building. They are taught, ideally, by a single teacher through all four elementary grades (except for physical training and, if available, foreign languages). Starting from the fifth grade, each academic subject is taught by a dedicated specialty teacher. The school year extends from September 1 to end of May and is divided into four terms. Study program in schools is fixed; unlike in some Western countries, schoolchildren or their parents have no choice of study subjects. Students are graded on a 5-step scale, ranging in practice from 2 ("unacceptable") to 5 ("excellent"); 1 is a rarely used sign of extreme failure. Teachers regularly subdivide these grades (i.e. 4+, 5-)…
