Why can’t you buy Chanel online?
For the love of God: why?
Ever logged on hoping to kill time by putting a Chanel 2.55 handbag into your basket, looking at it all afternoon before logging off again because you haven’t been paid yet?
No? No. We would never do that, either.
But only because the possibility does not exist, as Chanel does not sell so much as a pearl hairpin online. (Although their fragrance and beauty ranges are available on the internet).
Despite the fact that they are one of the world’s best loved luxury brands, and the fact that Karl Lagerfeld is a confirmed technophile, who even has an iPad for his pet cat, the Chanel website merely encourages customers to visit their nearest boutique.
Chanel’s president Bruno Pavlovsky explained why yesterday. He told the website The Business of Fashion that, ‘You need to be in the fitting room. You need to have a tailor who alters the clothes to fit exactly to your body. I think it's part of Chanel. It's more than just our service. It's part of our differentiation to have ready-to-wear that is perfect for our customers.’
Far be it from us to point out it hasn't put off millions of online shoppers who already simply return any ill-fitting designer items without batting an eye. But the brand who suggest a hula hoop bag for the beach are always going to do things a little differently.
