During this observation I was able to shadow a friend of mine who now teaches 10th grade history. When I arrived at this school it looked like a regular high school yet it was very different. On this particular day, there were 2 administrators at the main entrance greeting students encouraging them to be excited about the coming school day. As I walked through the halls I was amazed at all of the academic and athletic accomplishments the students have achieved. Locke being located in South Los Angeles was a pretty diverse school. I would say the majority of students were Latino and the second largest ethnic group African-American. The teacher I shadowed was 25, year old Danny Huerta from Pasadena California. Huerta's teaching style was very interactive with the students he would stand in the doorway of the classroom and pass out the class agenda for the day and ask students individually how their day was going so far. The students were very excited and willing to take the instructions Danny gave without talking back or taking very long to get settled. The classroom behavior was very calm and engaging. Often people think about high school students as wild and unruly, but I can see how Mr. Huerta's attention to detail, shows that he indeed cares and wants to become
