Loran Scholars Qualities
The Loran Scholars Foundation awards many young people with awards every single year. The foundation gives up to 32 students the Loran Award as well as, about 94 other awards. The Loran Award grants a student with $100,000 over the four years of their degree, which also includes summer internships, mentorship and a network for students to be a part of. The Loran Scholars Foundation looks beyond just the marks and ranking of students and looks into their character as well. This foundation looks for students to have integrity and courage, leadership skills and provide service to their community. I believe that I possess the skills and character traits that the Loran Scholars Foundation is looking for as well as, many other skills and attributes.
To begin, I have displayed my courage and integrity through many different situations throughout my life and specifically, through my drive and school experiences. I grew up in a single-parent household and my mother helped me to work hard in

I have always volunteered when possible. Starting in elementary school, I volunteered at a few food banks, a marathon event, at my local chili fest, participated in environmental clean ups and provided my tutoring services. Servicing my community is very important to me because this community has done so much for me. I have gone to the local YMCA since I was young and a lot of the workers there are volunteers; therefore, from a young age I have been trying my best to give back to the services that have been provided for me. Also, through tutoring I have been able to volunteer my time and help students who need it. I have been tutoring fellow students and younger students since eighth grade for volunteer hours. I feel that it is so important to dedicate your time to something without needing to get something out of it. I volunteer in many aspects, solely for the sake of helping

Have you had any volunteer experiences and, if so, what did you like about participating? Give at least one example of what you liked. I have volunteered with Canterbury United Methodist Church on a mission trip and the Birmingham Zoo. When I volunteered with Canterbury, we went on a mission trip to Asheville, North Carolina for a week during the summer. I had the opportunity to travel to another city, in a different state, to help those who are less fortunate and live in harsh conditions. Seeing the harsh conditions that some people live in was very eye-opening for me because it really made me realize how fortunate, not only I, but the rest of my community is. I loved helping the people in Asheville because I knew that it is something they…

Helping my community opened up a new side of me and showed me that helping out the people around me was something I enjoyed doing. I’ve volunteered at Rancho Elementary multiple times and will continue to do so over every chance I get as it makes me happy to help my community and see other people having fun. I was also a part of the Scripps Spelling Bee in 6th grade and after many days of hard work and effort, I placed 1st in the school and proceeded to place 2nd in all of…

Since eighth grade I have volunteered regularly at Prodisee Pantry, a local food bank that gives out boxes of food every week. Prodisee was the first place I volunteered on my venture. Then I started to serve at my old middle school on Tuesdays, usually in the science department where I could offer the most assistance. From there I began leading a small group for middle schoolers at one of my churches on Wednesday nights. However, that was the extent of my service for the first two months of the year, but soon I did something completely new to remind me of the purpose of the 365…

I believe that community service and volunteer work are very important. The best thing a person can donate is their time. I feel it’s every individual’s responsibility and beyond. I also feel it would help me develop better leadership skills by planning and organizing food drives and park cleaning etc. All in all I know that I can and I will make a difference in people’s lives every day.…

By giving your time and showing compassion for the people in need you will help them to feel comfortable getting the assistance that is so necessary to their survival and health. Volunteering is a way to help that has the ability to give back. There are many great benefits to volunteer work, and not only by helping people in need. According to Shayla in Benefits of Volunteering in College, volunteering can also "build your network", "strengthen your resume", and of course give you the knowledge to better understand the people you are giving your time to (Shayla). Building your network will be a vital part of life when trying to find jobs, internships, and make business connections. People you meet through volunteering have the ability to forever affect your life and may well continue to be a part of your life for years to come. What better place to meet people who share the same drive to help others as you do than at an organization who helps feed Americans in need? These hours will not go unnoticed on your resume either. "Scholarship committees love to learn how youth are helping their communities." These hours will not only be valued by the people they help, as you spend time helping others your outlook on life is changed by the skills and real life experience you gain from it. While giving your time you will see that people who are in need are no different from…

When I was younger, I participated in Girl Scouts where we volunteered in food pantries, senior centers, hospitals, animal shelters and charities for the less fortunate. We also participated in service projects such as making cards for veterans, making blankets for hospitals and the homeless, and made care packages for veterans and the hurricane victims. Volunteering is important to me because I had an aunt that unfortunately died of cancer and I feel that no one should have to go through the pain and suffering that she did.…

As long as I can remember service to others was always encouraged by my family and teachers. For example, I helped teachers with the intent of lightening their load of work so they can be able to go home earlier. Things like this make me proud because I am able to help others, and to bring a smile to their faces. My excuse to avoid community service was that I always thought that school was all about homework and getting good grades to be on the top 20 of your class. Truth is I have always overlooked this people thinking they were being lazy for not working, but through this community service I learned that each and everyone around the world is fighting their own battles and we all deal with them the best way we can. I am proud of myself because I went to that community service and learned about this people who I had always stereotyped by their actions, community service has encouraged me to actively listen and learn from others, to walk alongside my neighborhood and to build new…

Yes, volunteering teaches you social skills and it looks good on a resume, but none of that stuff matters if you don’t have a good character. Your character is something that you can’t get rid of, but you can change. Volunteering can change you into a more patient, loving, and smart individual. In the past I’ve volunteered for the Carl Perkins Center, which deals with children who have been abused. Working with these children showed me how blessed I am. It made me more thankful, for my parents and family members. I made it my job to make those children happier than they were when I walked in. By the time I left I was the one who was more affected. Those children didn’t care about worldly things; all they wanted was your attention. This showed me that the gift of time is sometimes the best gift a person can…

Over the years I have repeatedly proven my dedication to my success and will continue to do so throughout my life. I consider myself to be an individual who has, despite limited resources managed to become one of the top students of her graduating class. Having immigrant parents, I translated for my parents constantly and was the only one capable of filling out important documents due to my parent's inefficiency in the English language. Everyone has had different struggles but we all seem to develop differently within these hardships. With these different stories, one can create a powerful diverse environment bringing beauty and recognition to all those involved. This is my life story……

I have volunteered at a few high profile events such as: the London Olympics, the London marathon and the regent street Christmas lights switch on, which gave me good team-working skills and communication skills, but I have also volunteered within my local community in youth clubs as a youth support volunteer where I helped the person who ran the youth club to teach the young people, who were from different backgrounds to make friends by using my knowledge and skills to help teach them to bake. Helping people is a passion of mine and I have volunteered in the children’s outpatient department at Evelina Children’s hospital; where I helped patients to use the self-check in machines and also to show them to where they needed to go. I am also currently in the process of joining the Army Reserves as a combat medical technician; where I will work as part of a team to ensure the soldiers are fit and healthy to carry out their tasks and to treat anyone in an emergency situation. I play volleyball and am looking forward to playing again whilst at University because I recognise how important good physical health is to maintaining good mental…
