Navy SEAL Ralph on the Battlefield
The book, Lord of the Flies, is by William Golding is about a group of young boys who get stranded on a deserted island after their plane was shot down. The boys are then fending for themselves and due to the amount of freedom, some of the boys start to transform into savages. Ralph, the main character, does not turn into a savage and is appointed leader of all the boys at the beginning. He works hard to ensure that everyone is happy and working to help get them off the island. Just like Ralph, Navy SEALs carry out hard missions that are harder than normal enlisted sailors have. Navy SEALs encounter obstacles that develop and test their leadership, and ability to work as a team. They will also test their stamina. Due to the fact that there is a high risk of danger, they are always needing to stay on top of their toes. The main character, Ralph, would make a great Navy SEAL because he displayed great responsibility, leadership, and cooperation during his childhood.
I.Responsibility
Throughout the book, Lord of the Flies, Ralph was required to have responsibility. He does this constantly through the book, by checking on the boys and making sure that they are safe. “And we want shelter” (Golding 51). Ralph was always working on trying to build shelter to protect that boys from beast and the environment. He wanted to build the shelter so the boys can have a place that they could feel safe and protected. Ralph did this because he knows the boys are having bad dreams and everyone agrees that shelter is a good idea. The boys were under Ralph’s responsibility and he was ensuring that they would be safe from anything on the island.
In the same way, Navy SEALs are required to have responsibility. “Navy SEALs take every responsibility given to them with pride and this includes sacrificing their life for the county” (US). These men are always working in different environments, that means there are threats of different diseases and enemy hideouts. They always need responsibility to be able keep an eye out for their teammates and ensure their safety or else something could happen to them, like being shot dead. They take responsibility to a new level and are constantly making it harder and harder to reach it. Navy SEALs are hard workers with pride in their blood. For instance, the Navy’s SEAL Team 6 had shot and killed Osama Bin Laden in May 2011. This was an anti-terrorism raid and this required a lot of responsibility for a lot of soldiers died in Iraq in search for him, and it was known that someone may get hurt on this mission.
II. Leadership
Also, Ralph displays great leadership by presenting new ideas to the boys.
These ideas are used to help them get off the deserted island and get home to where they belong. “If we have a signal going, they’ll come and take us off”(Golding 42). Ralph wanted the boys to build a fire to signal a ship that may be passing by the island so they could get rescued from the deserted island. By displaying these ideas to the boys, Ralph shows leadership because he is presenting ideas that can possibly get them off the island and he wants to get off the island as much as they do. He also comes up with the idea that they could use another character’s glasses to start up the fire. Ralph has great leadership while working with the boys to come up with ideas for help.
Like Ralph, Navy SEALs need to have a great trait of leadership. They need to be able to be tactical in areas that are unknown to them. SEALs have to come up with ideas on how to be tactical in different situations. “Tactics, far from strategic, are used by SEALs in almost every operation they participate it” (Ryan). There are many different types of tactics used by Navy SEALs, such as raids, ambushes, and patrolling. These tactics show great leadership ability because they have to decide
on
when the team should go and when it is safe. Navy SEALs used tactics in order to kill Osama Bin Laden and in other battles.
III.Bravery
Finally, in Lord of the Flies, Ralph displayed great bravery. He shows his bravery when he decided to go look for the beast on the island. “I’m chief. I’ll go. Don’t argue” (Golding 104). In doing this, he showed that he would sacrifice his life in order to show whether there was a beast on the island or not. He proved his bravery by going up the hill alone when no one else would go. Ralph is brave by facing his fears alone and not hesitating in his actions. The author, William Golding, proves Ralph’s bravery through his actions and selflessness.
Just like Ralph, Navy SEALs have great bravery as well. “Navy SEALs are the men who have willingly jumped into a cauldron of fire so that YOU and ME can live in peace” (US). These men are constantly risking their lives so we can live another day in freedom. They must be brave when they know they might die today and never be able to see their family again. Navy SEALs are given tough missions that require bravery. A lot of decisions have to be made on the frontline and SEALs must be brave to do the mission right and take on the mission head on. One example is Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell in Operation Redwing. “...Marcus Luttrell and his teammates valiantly fought for hours, displaying characteristic SEAL determination and bravery, refusing to retreat from the fight despite being heavily outnumbered” (Marcus). Four Navy SEALs were sent out on June 28, 2005 to gather information on the taliban, three of them were killed that day and all of them presented bravery by taking this mission.
In conclusion, Ralph’s past characteristics resemble those close to a Navy SEALs characteristics. Ralph, from William Golding’s book Lord of the Flies, is capable of outstanding leadership by the way he comes up with ideas for help and he has bravery by facing fears. Also, he is capable of responsibility by making sure everyone is okay. Similarly, Navy SEALs have responsibility by ensuring the team is okay and by coming up with tactics in enemy territory they have leadership. Not only do Navy SEALs have these qualities they also have bravery by facing missions that require them to possibly lose their life. Ralph’s responsibility, leadership, and bravery were apparent through his actions on the island; he would make a great Navy SEAL.
