- One of the main characters in the novel. He has many characteristics such as being very athletic, charismatic, leading, and a smart protagonist of the group of kids. Ralph was elected the leader of the boys at the beginning of the book. While most of the other boys are mainly concerned with having fun and not doing any work, Ralph focuses on building huts and thinking of ways to increase their chances of being rescued. Ralph’s influence over the other boys is safe at the beginning of the novel. Eventually, most of the boys except for his close friend Piggy leave Ralph’s group for the antagonist Jack, and Ralph is left alone with piggy to be hunted by Jack’s large group.

It’s also during an unknown during a fictional atomic war. On the south side of the island there is a beach where the boys spend most of their time at for a little while. Towards the middle of the island there is where a plane crash site is. Right to the west is a pig run where they get their meat from so they can survive. Lastly at the very peek north on the island there is a gigantic rigid mountain that plays a big part in the story.
The island starts out on the beach where the boys are stranded and are thinking of a way to get rescued and to also find all the other lost boys who had crashed with them as well. Ralph and piggy find a conch shell which the blow and all the lost kids find their way to them. They build a civilization in which they all live in and explore the island to find places for resources such as food, water, and shelter. The whole group ends up going into the mountain to look for a beast and Jack then declares himself leader even though Ralph already is. That starts a problem between the characters in the story so they end up with two groups. Jacks group takes the mountains and ralphs takes the beach as their war
