He is not the strongest wizard, but he is most definitely the most courageous wizard in his world. In The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf faces the demon Balrog alone. He defends humans elves and dwarves until the can reach safety. Only then is he weak enough for the Balrog to drag him down into the bowels of the Earth. Sadly, this separates Gandalf from the group, and he does not have the ability to know if the others ever make it out of the mountain. His intelligence is limited to what he sees first hand. In The Lord of the Ring series, Gandalf is not as strong as Sauromon, the leader of all of the wizards in that world. As a character, Gandalf represents hope in the face of darkness. He inspires characters to push forward or look to the light when things are dark. During the Battle of Helms Deep, the Fellowship's army struggles to defend themselves. At their darkest hour, Gandalf arrives , as he had promised, with additional military support. They fight together, creating two fronts for Sauron's army to fight off, and ultimately win the battle. Gandalf's instructions to look to the East gave the Fellowship the hope and strength to fight on, even when it appeared that all was lost. His arrival, at Dawn no less, brought light back to the story. In The Two Towers, the Fellowship was convinced that Gandalf had been killed by the Balrog. They mourned his passing and struggled to move forward on their quest. But Gandalf had not been defeated. He had simply moved on to another wizard form, and he had actually increased in power! When he reunited with the Fellowship, he gave them hope for the future, because he was still on their side. The darkness had been pushed back again. Conversely, Dumbledore is the strongest wizard in the story of Harry Potter. He has exceptional reasoning abilities, knows the most spells, and is undefeated by any rivals. Much of Dumbledore's strength comes from his possession of the Elder Wand. Said to be
