Myers et al., (2005) studied individuals in India living in arranged marriages and found no differences in marital satisfaction in comparison to individuals in non-arranged marriages in the US. This is also supported by Gupta and Singh (1982) who studied 100 degree-educated couples living in India, 50 of who had chosen their partners and 50 of who had their marriages arranged for them. The couples were asked to indicate how much they liked/loved their partners and it was found that love and liking was high in love marriages but decreased whereas love increased in arranged marriages and after 10 years exceeded love marriages. However, this study is difficult to generalise as it studies only a small sample and so cannot be generalised to the wider population. It therefore lacks validity.…
In chapter thirteen, Susan J. Ferguson talks about arranged marriages and how love come from that. I have mix feeling about arranged marriages because it could either go a bad way or you could find the person of your dreams. One of my best friend is from the middle east and that is somehow acceptable or common in her culture. But from what she has tell me is common but not everyone does it because in her religion you cannot force someone to get marry. However, her family does not have any arranged family between them, it depends on your family traditions. In America, we do not have arranged marriages. We go by who we love, does not matter they passes life, family or financial status. Something that people who believe in arrange marriages see.…
The Union and Confederacy both had advantages and disadvantages. The North had better advantages because they had a higher populace, more industry, and better assets than the South. It had a better banking system that they could rely upon to help them raise money for the fight. Furthermore, the North had more ships and a had a proficient and larger railroad framework. On the other hand, the South had the benefit of fighting in a familiar region protecting their property, homes, and families. Another favorable position that the South had was having that military training background on the battle field. The disadvantage that happened in the North were attempting to take the Southerners back to the Union, and by doing that they would need to attack and hold the South in their intimidating populace. The South faced material disadvantages. They had a smaller population of free man to manufacture an armed force. It had a couple of facilities to help distribute weapons, food, and other supplies. The South experienced issues conveying food, weapons, and supplies to…

In “The Radical Idea of Marrying for Love,” Stephanie Coontz goes on to explain that marriages are more complicated now because they’re based on “true love” rather than just a simple partnership without feelings as they once were. She proves this point with many historical examples such as the culture behind Hindu marriages where love is not a factor in the decision to marry. However, unlike some of the other cultures Hindu traditions actually appreciate the growth of love as long as it is after a couple is married. I find this interesting because as an American it shocks me that people can commit to spend the rest of their lives with each other without any romantic feelings for one another. However, I think there is a certain beauty in the…
Coontz discusses that love is not a reason to marry. Although her argument is pretty accurate, today’s society would disagree with this. People may feel that love is the only thing that is strong enough to keep people together until they die. After people run out of money, fame, and lose their good looks due to natural or…
Some people believe in love at first sight, while others believe it takes time to love someone. In life having a companion is a very important factor. It’s hard to form a good relationship right when you meet that person. A marriage is a way for two people that are in love to show everyone, family and friends that they plan on being fully committed to one another for the rest of their lives. Typically marriages are left up to the two people that are getting married, but in special cases it is ultimately the parents’ decision. In the United States we have a general outlook on how life should be which when compared to another society can be completely different. In Katie Chase’s story Man and Wife an arranged marriage…

First reason I think in the same way as view 2 about arranged marriages and love marriages because I feel people should trust in themselves more than parents or a matchmaker. Based on a love marriage which mean two people trust in themselves more than someone else advice to them or decide for them of they have to do, and about choose someone to be a marriage partner for them. Just like in the Catalyst 2 book on page 93, chapter 4, reading 2, view 2, and paragraph 6 mean that they can understand their own feeling, their own decision and their mind better than just listen from someone telling them about their own future was like. Instead of let their family get involve in future partner; they can learn and…

“The Radical Idea of Marrying for Love” is written by Stephanie Coontz. She talks about how marrying for love is not as common as everyone thinks. She shows the facts about how love is only a bonus to getting married. This article makes everyone that reads it appreciate how lucky they are to actually love their partners. The thesis of this piece of work is that everyone should enjoy what they have in life, because love is such a special gift that we all take for granted.…
Many parents want the best for their child, but choosing the one their child should marry is not the answer. Although, parents think choosing for their child is the best decision, they don’t know the many disadvantages that may occur within the marriage. One major disadvantage is that their child may not know the person, leading to a higher chance of divorce. Parents generally arrange their child’s marriage when the child is too young. Arranged marriages are a poor definition of…
Arranged marriages are done in around 60% of the world because the system works. In Asia, mainly India and China, arranged marriages are the main form of marriage though this has decreased as science the 18th century. To the parents, choosing their child’s spouse is much more beneficial for the family than the child picking someone that might not be the best fit for the family. Because the parents get to pick, they can chaise someone who is close to the families’ roots, someone who shares the same values of the parents, and someone who will preserve their families culture in future generations. The benefits also work as a union of families, economically and socially as the two families will become more powerful united with each other. The article, Arranged Marriages, by Jefferson M. Fish, Ph.D.…
Love and marriage are hot topics in all ages, let alone in modern society, for they concern every individual. In recent years, the relationship between them is becoming increasingly complicated. Marriage or love means differently to different people. Some believe that love and marriage are a whole part while others hold the opposite notion. Personally specking, I think that love and marriage are separate and they do not relate to each other so tightly as others think, allowing for the fact that love is not the guarantee of marriage, nor an indispensable part of marriage and marriage is not necessarily the reflection of love.…
