Upon completion of my undergraduate work, I will be pursuing a Masters of Business Administration, with a focus of healthcare administration. After the completion of my first year of graduate work, I intend to apply for a work-study position as a “Health Systems Specialist”, at the local VA facility. These work-studies are paid internships in which the department of veteran’s affairs trains and evaluates the competencies of prospective employees. Upon completion of the one-year work-study, I will be eligible for a non-competitive conversion to a permanent or term appointment within the VA health care system (U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, n.d.).

During the work program, the employee will be rotated through multiple different agencies within the program in order to broaden the knowledge and experience of the prospective employee. Additionally the employee will complete a broad range of management tasks associated with the field (U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, n.d.).
Aside from the requirement of graduate level studies, additional traits are analyzed in order to determine a prospective employee’s value to the organization. These competencies include written and oral communication skills, along with several other managerial skills such as decision-making and task prioritization (U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, n.d.).
The Health systems specialist is a broad position but considering the overall purpose of the job, this is practical. The job is meant to be a platform for future positions within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), and allows the VHA to appraise the true value of an employee without any long-term risk.
