Macbeth Diary Entry Analysis
Entry 1:
Three weird witches came up to Banquo and I today when we were coming home from battle. They told me that I would be named Thane of Cawdor and eventually King, I don't know if I believe them though. What could happen to King Duncan that would make me king? What about Malcolm? Maybe I shouldn’t worry about their silly witchcraft, I don’t believe in magic that much anyways.
We beat the rebellion today, and I became Thane of Cawdor! Duncan is coming to my house tomorrow to have to dinner with my wife and I. Maybe what the witches say is true! But does this mean I have to kill Duncan? There would be no better place to do it than at my own house. I have to speak to my wife, she will know what to do.

Entry 2: Duncan’s at my house now,

Who knows, either way I’m ready to kill him. I’ve been through way too much to let this little wimp take my life from me. I feel like I’m going crazy, I don't know what to write in here anymore. I just want this paranoia to go away, I want my mind to be at peace. I want Macduff dead and I want to remain in power.

Entry 8: My lady is severely ill. She is sleepwalking, I fear she is not sane. She constantly is mumbling to herself about Banquo coming out of the grave and washing blood off her hands that isn’t there. Maybe if her memory was erased she would stop doing these things. But is it possible to erase someone’s memory? We have the finest doctor in the world, of course it is! I will advise him to make an antidote at once! The doctor says it’s not possible to create an antidote to erase memory…. My wife is doomed.

Entry 9: I hear an army marching and drumming. Macduff is here, finally, what took so long? Now is my chance to kill them all and prove to everyone how great of a king I am. Macduff will die in vain, he will never hurt me! Nobody will ever kill me! I have been informed that my wife is dead, I loved her. But she was going to die anyways, she lost her mind. I don’t need her help, I’m invincible! BRING IT ON

“Tongue nor heart cannot conceive nor name thee!” (2.3. 74). Thy greatest king hath been murdered. Thoughts of sorrow and wondering have filled thee. Who wouldst do such a thing? Was thy host not watchful enough with the most honored man in his presence? Maybe thou should have stayed with his Majesty for he is of the highest nobility and honor possible. Who ever hath committed this crime is guilty of murder and treason. Oh! The people, the people! What shall become of them without thy leader? Will the criminals roam the streets, with the people fearing to leave their homes? All of these are questions with no answers! I do believe it’s my turn to step in and allow myself the privilege of discovering which fiend it was that hath murdered his Majesty, the king. At first, it was thought to be the beast like guards who stood outside the king’s chamber. It deeply concerns me as to why Macbeth would dispose of them so soon after the death of his royal highness without the chance to probe their minds with questions and make them face the rest of Scotland as those whom betrayed their leader. Maybe it was the sons of the great Duncan which have set up the murderous plot to gain the throne for their own selfish purpose. The fact that they have left the country and fled in opposite directions is beyond my knowledge. If they wanted to be king, why murder your own father and flee to a different country…? What about the recently promoted Thane of Cawdor? He holds much too great of an honor and sincerely respected Duncan. But still, he did murder the guards; maybe he was hiding something like a vital piece of information. Now that I think of it, if I had been the one in Macbeth’s position, I too may have lost my temper. In the wise words of Macbeth, “Who can be wise, amazed, temp’rate, and furious,/ Loyal, and neutral, in a moment? No man.” (2.3. 27-28).…

Ever since King Duncan’s death; turmoil, corruption and treachery have all poisoned the castle. It has corrupted my soul, it has changed my beliefs and in some regards, I have lost my faith. I am merely a servant; I am not one to judge, but I have seen and witnessed many things. It seems the presence of a servant is forgotten. That I do not have ears and eyes; that I do not see as others do. The only thing that keeps my tongue still is the love I have for my lady. I would not say I am clear on this fact, but it is in my belief that my lady assisted in the death of King Duncan. Since his death, I have watched her sleep, she has uttered strange and foul words, her actions are not normal. If any others saw her, they would say she is possessed and in my own mind, I, too, could believe that.…

Regardless, leaders who crave power and desire superiority agree to weaken and terrorize people threatening their power. Equally, in Shakespeare's Macbeth, the witches tell Macbeth to be cautious of Macduff, "Beware Macduff, Beware the Thane Fife!" (125). Macbeth believes Macduff is his personal enemy that will take his power away from him. The fear of loosing the battle with England infuriates Macbeth to kill everyone close to him like Lady Macduff, his children, and his castle. To the point, Macbeth is consumed with fear of what he has done, which causes him to be sleep deprived and ravaged with guilt. He kills innocent people just to obtain more power and takes the opportunity to take down those in his way. A person who sees something that…

Macduff helps develop the theme of evil and supernatural. His actions towards Macbeth and his name being mentioned as a threat in the second set of prophecies make Macbeth commit one of his darkest deeds. This action shows evil because Macbeth sends assassins to an unguarded castle to kill many innocent people including Macduff’s family. Macduff helps to develop the theme of loyalty and patriotism. He does so by going to England to get the true heir Malcolm and military allies to free Scotland of Macbeth. Finally, Macduff shows guilt for leaving his family after finding out that Macbeth slaughtered his family. He…

“I shall do so; But I must also feel it as a man: I cannot but remember such things were, That were most precious to me. Did heaven look on, And would not take their part? Sinful Macduff, They were all struck for thee!” (IV.iii 203). Macduff controls his ambition that makes him able to offer mercy to Macbeth. “Then yield thee coward, And live to be the show and gaze o’ the time:” (V.viii 2). Macbeth does not want mercy; he would rather die than be seen as a bad person. Macduff kills Macbeth not out of vengeance but for the good of the country. Macduff saves the country from being run by a crazy man and saves many other people that Macbeth would have killed in order to keep his…
