She has won multiple humanitarianism awards, as well as the Nobel Peace Prize. Her story has inspired and changed multiple perceptions of female education. But how did Malala become so known? When Malala Yousafzai was just fifteen years old, she became an advocate for the educational rights of girls, realizing the importance of this ongoing issue. “We realize the importance of our voices, only when we are silenced” Malala expressed. Although, at the time, it was against the societal values in Mingora, Pakistan for a woman to receive an education. Malala brought and encouraged girls to be educated at a school that her father had owned. She had received multiple death threats, but she chose to ignore them and stood true to her beliefs. On October 9th, 2012, this decision made by this driven young advocate resulted in a life-changing event. Malala was held at gunpoint and shot in the head by the Taliban, a fundamentalist terrorist group. This may affect their decisions especially in difficult times as to whether they want to achieve their goals or just give up. A perfect example is the all-time basketball star, Michael Jordan. When Michael Jordan was an adolescent, he was determined to be a basketball player when he grew up. He would put his blood, tears, and sweat into basketball. However, when he was on the high school basketball team, he wasn't the best. He missed many shots and made the team lose at times. The coach had kicked him off the team saying he would never be able to play basketball, but he didn't allow that to be a set back from his goal of being a basketball player. The decision he made when he was in high school, changed Michael Jordan's life forever. “I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game-winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Michael Jordon states. Although he’s had a lot of setbacks constantly in his life, he didn't let those situations affect his decision of becoming a basketball player.
