Maleficent a Hero, Villain, or Both
Over the years, Disney has portrayed many villains in their movies. Many of these villains are portrayed as evil, wicked, rotten, and just plain scary. However, they never explain what made these villains the evil, malicious person they have come to be viewed as. Is it possible that they are just misunderstood? Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent may be one of the wickedest and scariest villains in all of Disney’s movies, but recently Disney brought out a movie showing everyone more into her character and the story behind the villain. (Monk, 2014) “A revisionist fairy tale with a wonderfully sharp feminist edge, Maleficent features Angelina Jolie, pictured, in the title role of the famed villainess who tortured poor Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, the 1959 animated Disney classic. Everyone knows how that story ends. But viewers don't really know where it all began, and why Maleficent was so angry in the first place. We simply take wicked women as a fact of fairy tale life.” While there were similarities between this villain’s original 1959 portrayal of Maleficent and the more recent 2014 movie portrayal there was also many differences.
In both the 1959 and 2014 portrayal of Maleficent, the audience is shown a very wicked and in some opinions beautiful being with magical powers. The image that is painted in the viewer’s minds by both movies is that Maleficent is sinister and out for revenge on King Stefan whom she has a hatred for. Both movies show an elegantly dressed and devious villain who curses the first born daughter of the king and queen to prick her finger on a spindle after she is not invited to the royal christening. Maleficent does this in order to punish the king. Another similarity viewers see of Maleficent between both movies is the raven that Maleficent keeps as a sidekick. Maleficent appears to be stoic and does not show

Both Ms. Strangeworth from “The Possibility of Evil” and Captain Torres from “Lather and Nothing Else” represent the villain archetype; however, Miss Strangeworth better represents it because she enjoys the evil she causes, whereas Captain Torres does not. First of all, the roles of the characters are shown as villains throughout both of the stories. In the case of Miss Strangeworth, it is when she sends her malicious messages to the town without regard for their feelings (Jackson 5). Meanwhile, Captain Torres is revealed as the villain when the barber remembers “...the sight of the mutilated bodies kept me from noticing the man who had directed it all” (Tellez 1) about the captain. The two of them do horrible things to their respective towns; Miss Strangeworth, by sending her…

The idea of heroismhas been traced back to centuries of years throughout history. Greek Mythology is the father of this concept of heroism and this concept has continued to grow and develop through stories, writings, and films over the years. Humans have always been intrigued with the idea of heroism which is why many movies, books, and stories are written after this very idea. In Linda Seger’s “Creating the Myth”, she argues there are 10-points into creating every “hero myth”, using Luke Skywalker in Star Wars as her hero myth example; in the film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry follows Seger’s 10-point system of creating a “Hero Myth” very closely.…

For generations, Walt Disney films have been a “must watch” by parents, children and their families. However, these people may not see the hidden meanings behind Disney films. Currently, children are constantly exposed to media and opinions inherently presented within television, films, radio, books and more. Disney films are no exception. The films Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty all reinforce traditional gender roles, and the idea that lightness is supreme and will help when it comes to goodness conquering evil.…

Different hero’s can take many different journeys, but Joseph Campbell has shown that there are patterns that can be recognized throughout each and every unique yet similar journey. These recognizable patterns can be found in any way shape or from when dealing with a hero story. One story that is a prime example of a true “hero’s journey” is the story of Mr. Incredible from the movie The Incredibles. His powers include super strength, agility, and speed along with limited invulnerability. A typical main superhero skill set.…

Most people cannot imagine coveted childhood fairytale with pure sadistic characters, blood, death and neglect. Disney motion pictures have depicted their classic fairytales by painting picture of princess with a loving parent, a dead parent, and a wonderful outlook on life with just the hope of dreams coming true. Many people cannot fathom the idea of a beloved fairytale containing the dark acts of rape, torture, and cannibalism. After all, Snow White’s apple was just meant to put her to sleep; and Sleeping Beauty did find her prince right? Wrong. In the original Grimm Fairytales Snow Whites apple was meant to kill her for good and Sleeping Beauty’s prince was more of a rapist who impregnated her as she slept. Although the Grimm’s fairytales seem to be a much more disturbing version of the Disney films, maybe these stories taught some higher morals and lessons. Or is Disney’s replacement of lessons with idealism and imagination better?…

In the Grimm Fairytales, there are many antagonists. The most occurring, however, is the Evil Stepmother archetype. In most stories, this character is insensitive to the familial needs, "No, Aschenputtle, you have no proper clothes, and you do not know how to dance, and you will be laughed at!" (Aschenputtle) , opting instead to follow the path of greed or vanity. Almost always beautiful, the evil stepmother often strives to maintain that beauty and fortune for the sake of self "Queen, you are full fare, 'tis true, But Snow-white fairer is than you" (Snow-White). Now, in classical literature, Step-parents were often associated with grief and loss. In order for them to exist, a parent would have had to have died. In addition to this, she also could represent the fear of aging that the people of that time had. She represents the resentment the child has for the so called "replacement". In addition to that representation, she could also represent the dark side that children see in their own mothers. In the stories she is present in, she is always cruel. From making the step daughter do mindless and menial chores, such as in "Aschputtle" to attempting to completely destroy the lives of the children, such as in "The Six Swans", she is completely self centered and spiteful towards those she perceives could overtake her view in the eyes of those in power. However, hope still prevails, and the plans enacted never take place. Instead, someone clever and of nobility intervines and stops the evil schemes. The end for the Evil Stepmother is often violent and ultimately…

The movie is still keeping the gender stereotype alive and thriving even in people’s homes. In today’s America, where women are in the vanguard of dignified treatment, respect and equality for women, the gender role in fairy tales especially Cinderella is still the same. As Silima Nanda points out, “Ambitious women in fairy tales are always portrayed as evil from within, ugly and scheming, wielding over other women and men” (Portrayal of Women 246-250). While there has been efforts to rewrite fairy tale like Sleeping Beauty for the screen, Cinderella remains the passive girl with an evil stepfamily. The stepmother is typecast as wicked, cannibalistic and self-conceited because she wants a better life for…

Amy M. Davis has written a book, Good Girls and Wicked Witches, concerning the history of female representation and femininity in Disney animated films. She took the same idea but chose a different subject. She analyzed masculinity in these films regarding the men and boys. She begins discussing the secondary side kicks and their perception in films. Davis then discusses the male princes in the films, even describing them as handsome. The author eventually examines the male villains and has notice many are usually flamboyant, disfigured, or odd. She ends with her conclusions and list all the films she’s used in her…
