I found Karen McCarthy Brown’s Mama Lola to be an innovative and intimate “ethnographic spiritual biography” exploring the lived realities, material and immaterial, of a Haitian Voudou priestess and her family in New York City from the late 1970’s through the 1980’s. (xiv) Brown’s approach is innovative because she treats her subjects’ as multivocal and fluid. Brown heeds her own advice and contrary to most ethnographic scholars before her, appropriately represents her own, albeit limited, voice, and positionality as similarly multiplicitous and in flux, reciprocally performing “meaningmaking” with Alourdes and family. Brown’s many voices aptly declare numerous interrelated aims, including “to describe as fully and accurately ... Alourdes’ daytoday practice of Haitian Vodou”, to “plant images of quotidian Vodou practice in the minds of thinking people, images that would linger and soften the formulaic association of Vodou with the superstitious and the satanic”, and to portray “Vodou embedded in the vicissitudes of particular lives.” (xv, xiv, 15)…

Choose one of the main lwa discussed by Karen McCarthy Brown and discuss its Vodou theology – that is, its sacred persona, mythic biography, special powers, specific characteristics, ritual practice, and so forth. Situate this lwa in relation to his or her Black Atlantic history in Haiti and beyond. In what ways does the imagery associated with this lwa reflect the confluence of both history and mythology – in other words, what is this law’s mythistory? Then examine the place of this lwa within Mama Lola’s religious practice: what role does it play in her life? How does she relate to and serve this lwa? Has the role of the lwa changed in her experience over time, and if so, how?…

Vision: “To design and implement a quality, community-based primary care system with an emphasis on intervention and prevention. A system which is caring, compassionate and competent focusing on the needs of our culturally diverse community as well as ways to continually improve and expand our service. The mission is used every minute and every day at my site. They have a routine when checking patients in, getting them ready when it’s their time to see the doctors etc. The doctor’s deal with patient and their needs different hit the “sensitive manner”. This hospital is made for the community to use in case of emergency. They have a rule they have to go by, like people can’t be waiting for so long, everyone has to helped and treated with respect there has been times when patients felt like they were being treated wrong. Human resources were called and came down to investigate the situation. Everyone seems to leave happy, and all questions have been answers. Since the hospital has gotten less money, the eye clinic can’t provide glasses. So they have made relationship with another place that makes glasses and will help the patient receive them for a low price. All the patient has to do is provide a prescription which the doctor has giving to them. My short term goal is to learn why some people can’t see out if there peripheral.…
