Client M is a wheelchair user who has been assessed as requiring assistance to manage continence as she is unable to weight bear, and therefore cannot self transfer. This assistance is through use of a passive hoist and sling system as outlined in her Moving and Handling Plan. This type of manoeuvre involves two trained staff. Client M has her own personal toileting sling which is kept in a secure cupboard within the group for infection control purposes and to avoid damage.
In line with the training I have received and in keeping with law (LOLER 1992/1994), I regularly carry out safety checks on the equipment that is used to assist Client M. On each day that I work with Client M I check the date …show more content…
I also carry out visual risk assessments of the toileting area before each use. I ensure that risks are kept to a minimum by making sure there is enough room to carry out manoeuvres, that the floor is dry and litter free, and that there are soap, gloves and aprons available. As part of infection control assessments I check that the toilet itself is clean and that my own hair and that of my colleague is tied back and that we both follow correct infection control procedures.
Client M has a risk assessment regarding epilepsy. Although she has been seizure free for several years, I am aware that there is the possibility of a seizure occurring whilst Client M is using the hoist thus resulting in injury risks. If this were to occur I would follow the risk management plan in supporting Client M into a safe position. When Client M does have a seizure, she tends to have several very close together. For this reason I would allow her plenty of time to recover, and not resume use of the hoist until Client M stated that she is ready to continue, and I and my colleague agree that sufficient time has passed to continue. I would complete the relevant documents and inform the relevant parties as soon as …show more content…
When Client M is ready to go, I remove her tray and assist her to remove and store her pinafore and bag as we collect her sling. Client M will inform me if she is menstruating and will bring her handbag when this is so. While helping Client M to manage continence, I talk my way through the process and reassure her throughout whilst also continuing whichever conversation we were having before leaving the group, or just generally chat. If the second staff member is Staff J1 or Staff J2, Client M usually likes to have a catch up chat with them. Client M has full involvement with the process as she will say whether she is comfortable or if anything needs adjustment, and will say when she feels that she has adequate clearance from her chair and when the hoist has been lowered
