Cheesecake Factory could face a variety of threats related to their expansion in Canada. Domestic economic conditions including unemployment, consumer purchasing and saving habits, wage rates could influence Cheesecake’s business and financial performance. Moreover, competition from other restaurants in the restaurant industry can also have a significant impact due to the fact the industry is very competitive, with regards to the menu, food quality, service and location, etc. Many Canadian-based restaurants operators such as Moxie’s Grill may have greater resources to the Canadian market; as a result, Cheesecake Factory could lose market share. Additionally, among other threats, such as trade restrictions, disruption in shipping, it may affect…

The beginning of this essay kind of made me chuckle because my parents are much the same way with maple syrup. Throughout my childhood, they would always push me to eat the "natural" kind. Just like the author of this essay Margery Guest, I much preferred the heavily processed and high fructose corn syrup infused name brands. Unfortunately for me, I was rarely able to convince my mom to buy any. Not until a few years ago did I realize the benefit and quality of "real" syrup, and reading this essay only reinforced that realization.…

High Fructose Corn Syrup is commonly known as the cost-effective sweetener used in most processed foods and drink beverages, making it popular for production and caused it to sweep over the sweets industry. In 1970, High Fructose Corn Syrup only represented less than 1% of the caloric sweeteners added to food and beverages. However, in 1980 the sweetener market steadily increased and high fructose corn syrup quickly became the replacement for sucrose, more commonly known as table sugar. Today, HFCS represents over 40% of the caloric sweeteners added to processed foods and beverages. It is cheaper, half the price of sucrose, and prolongs the shelf life of any item.…

I am against developing the Alberta Oil Sands because of how it affects people’s health, there is a limited supply of it, and how it affects the environment. Firstly, the health of those who live around the Oil Sands is negatively affected. A study made by the Alberta Cancer Board in 2009 showed that people who lived about 250 kilometers away from a tar sands development were experiencing higher than normal rates of cancer (ForestEthics). This study indicates that there is a correlation between one’s health and the Oil Sands; the oil sands should not continue to be developed as this would only continue to harm people’s health. Secondly, there is a limited supply of oil. In total, global reserves have about 1.3 trillion barrels of oil, which is enough for 40 years of consumption based off the current consumption rate (CITATION?).…

Deforestation is an ongoing issue throughout the world. To this date, we have lost more than 75 percent of the forests on Earth. Deforestation is the clearing of forests to make way for new, non-forest land uses, such as urban development or agriculture, transforming a forest into cleared land (“Deforestation and Afforestation”). When thinking about deforestation, the first place that comes in anyone’s mind is Brazil, because that is where the Amazon rainforest is located and it was once known to have the highest deforestation rate in the world. However, Canada, which accounts for “10 percent of the world’s forests…now accounts for 21 percent of all deforestation in the world” (Okolo). Due…

A classic Canadian staple food on everyone's table in the morning is maple syrup. Maple syrup is technically trees blood, and Canadians survive on trees blood, instead of drinking animal or human blood like many classic tales tell. Vampires do not have to survive on mammal blood, but many movies portray vampires this way to make them more gruesome and appealing to audiences in some weird fashion. Canadians do not eat maple syrup everyday, but so long as Canadians get a good dose of it once per year, or a few times throughout the year, they can function well in society. This is why during the maple season in the spring, Canadian vampires create many maple products to replenish themselves.…

The first people that lived in Canada were natives, primarily the Inuit (Eskimo). The Norse explorer Leif Eriksson may have reached the shores of Canada in 1000, but the actual history of the white man in the country actually began in 1497. This was when “John Cabot, an Italian in the service of Henry VII of England, reached Newfoundland or Nova Scotia. Canada was taken for France in 1534 by Jacques Cartier. France's colonization efforts were not very successful, but French explorers by the end of the 17th century had gone beyond the Great Lakes and south along the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.” (Canada) Hudson's Bay Company an English outfit had been established in 1670 and began exploiting the fisheries and fur trades. Over time, a conflict began to develop between the French and English and subsequently in 1713 Newfoundland, Hudson Bay, and Nova Scotia (Acadia) were lost to England. Later that century, during the Seven Years' War (1756–1763), England extended its conquest, and Quebec fell on Sept. 13, 1759. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 gave England control. At that time, Canada’s population was nearly all French, but over the next few decades thousands of British colonists immigrated to Canada from the British Isles and from the American colonies. In 1849, Canada won the right to self-government. By the British North America Act of 1867, the dominion of Canada was created through the confederation of Upper and Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. In 1869, Canada purchased from the Hudson's Bay Company the vast middle-west (Rupert's Land) from which the provinces of Manitoba (1870), Alberta (1905), and Saskatchewan (1905) were later formed. In 1871, British Columbia joined the dominion, and in 1873, Prince Edward Island followed. The country was linked from coast to coast in 1885 by the Canadian Pacific Railway. (Canada)…
