Marathon By Band Rush: Song Analysis
Most people, at one point in their lives, have been pushed to their absolute limits. Many times people are pushed by pure determination to reach their limits. Often times people are determined to overcome something whether it be mental, like education, or physical, like becoming strong. It is generally not the skill of the person but their willpower that helps them succeed. In the song “Marathon”, by the band Rush, the idea of a marathon is compared to life in the way that challenges you have to overcome. One of the ways they compare life to a Marathon is the way that determination can push people. In the song the second verse says that you “Got pick up the pace if you want to stay in the race”(l.11-12) and that “It’s the test of ultimate will”(l.9). …show more content…
When I entered sixth grade I chose to do band as my musical elective. The instrument I chose to play was the trumpet. Many people, when they start a instrument, quickly become very proficient at using that instrument and don't need as much practice using that instrument. Due to the fact I am not musically adept I struggled with the trumpet. I could not form most of the notes and struggled to keep up with the class when we played songs that were at faster paces. I did not give up, however, and started practicing many minutes a night so that I could get a passing grade in that class. I worked very hard to catch up with the class as I was determined to be good at the trumpet. Eventually, after many long hours of work, I became a proficient trumpet player and was able to keep up with the class. Determination pushed me to my limits by making me practice much more that I was required. Many times I almost gave up because I thought I couldn’t do it but I was determined to do so. Some nights I worked for 1-2 hours just to succeed as a trumpet player. Despite many times breaking down because I had been pushed to my absolute limits I persevered and due to my hard work

In “12 Uncomfortable Ways to Become a Better Runner in 2016” by Sinead Mulhern from December 17th of 2015, posted under Training in Canadian Running, she uses pathos and logos to show that even though a commitment to improvement may not be easy, these ideas will make the struggles the reward of improving that much more worthwhile. Through the constant reminder of how challenging the improvement will be, Mulhern explains that the struggle is what makes the reward that much…

First and foremost, the irony of this whole topic is almost too much to bear. In an effort to get me to fall into a superficial norm of laziness, others have put so much analyzing of “symbolism” and scrupulous thought into this topic. “Why on Earth do you run so much?” It seems that everyone has concluded one thing: running must be some representation, must carry some implications, or must have some definition of me that’s completely unfathomable.…

I didn’t know if I could do it. I had been out of school for 13 years but I knew I was tired of dead end jobs and that it is what my family needed me to do to provide for them. So the thought of my wife and kids is what I used to get me to go back to school and get a degree. Finally with maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or better has been my goal since I started. There have been ups and downs but I know that if I keep up my grade point average then I may be able to get a better job than if I just skate by and just go for the bare minimum. Over all I would have to say that my level of persistence is average and I say this due to the fact that I am a firm believer that you can always better yourself. By striving to always better yourself you will always see the world as a glass…

The decision I made that day was certainly not easy. Part of me wanted to give up and avoid the risk of disappointment and failure, but I chose to pursue my goals despite my fear of failure that stood in my way. I realized that failure is in essence a lack of success; therefore, quitting is the ultimate failure because it precludes any chance of success. From my new perspective, quitting to avoid failure would be absurd. I would gain absolutely nothing by not trying, so I decided to improve and try out again the next year.…

The Medieval period of music lasted from 500–1400 A.D. In this time period there were two main categories of music: secular and religious. Most of the secular music was sung by traveling musicians called troubadours. The Troubadours usually sang ballads or folk songs of love or heroism. The secular musicians' used string instruments such as psaltery, lyre, and the Vielle, the secular musicians used percussion instruments such as the drums. The religious music of that period was almost the opposite of the secular music. The religious musicians used almost no instruments except for some percussion instruments and a few stringed instruments, the music was mostly sung or chanted by monks. This style of music is known as plainchant.…

Endurance is something more than ability to continue in a race or workout, endurance is about pushing the boundaries to their limits both mentally and physically. Like outer space, endurance can grow and amaze even the greatest scientist of the human body. In Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken, Laura writes, “Time ticked on, and still Louie remained in the same position, conscious and yet not, the beam over his head, his eyes on the Bird’s face, enduring long past when strength should have given out.” The quote gives an idea about how athletes use thoughts like these to continue to go further and stronger. Many athletes, like Louie…
