Marching Band Narrative
A light sweat trickled down my back as the sun’s rays were beating down on me harshly when Alexa and I arrived at Warner’s Stadium. It was the first football game of the season and I was here helping out the band in the concession stands. For the past few weeks, I have been trying to get Alexa to become a part of the marching lions with her siblings but she keeps on stubbornly refusing. I have brought her with me to talk to some of the members in the band, see how much fun they have, and how close they are to one another. Hopefully we can convince Alexa to join the band tonight.
We watched the band get off of the buses and skip in through the gates and I told her one more time, “You should join the band Alexa.”
She replied with the same answer as always, “No, I’m good.”
I sent her and my husband up to the top of the stands to set up the camera that was going to record the first marching show of the season. I continued to set up the concession stand and let the night

I pulled Alexa over to the side as we walked back over to the concession stand.
I said “I don’t want you to feel pressured about joining this band. You shouldn’t say you want to join if you really don’t want to.”
She replied “No, I’ll join the band for freshmen year and see how it goes. It will help me in the future with college anyway.”
I could tell that she wasn’t telling the whole truth, but I let it go. I finished walking over to the concession stand while Alexa went back to the stands to sit with her friends. I of course was worried that we had gone too far and now Alexa felt that she had to do marching band. She said that she was fine and that she was choosing to do it. I sure hope this is true and that she is happy with her decision. The night went on with the clock ticking down slowly and the aroma of fresh, buttery popcorn filling my

As I pulled my hat on, a deluge of panic rushed over me. Suddenly, I felt like I was going to have an anxiety attack. I couldn’t have one - not after I’d worked so hard on controlling it. But as we lined up at the end zone, I knew I’d be okay. One last run through, one last push. With chins up and eyes wide with pride, we marched onto the football field, our hearts pounding, to our opening positions. I listened as the crowd cheered for us and the drum major, the leader and conductor of the band, saluted to express the band was ready. I performed my heart out, hitting every position, playing every note with all of my passion. Within nine fleeting minutes, we struck that last impact with everything we had and snapped our horns down, then hustled…

Leaping into our high school marching band’s “rebuilding season” with a dozen other novice classmates, I approached with a hesitant enthusiasm. Though I instantly gained a great passion for marching and competing, my inexperience, when combined with the similar inexperience of my peers, would lead to last place finishes at nearly every tournament. However, the failure of this unit did not cause me to become discouraged or resigned, but rather led me to take ownership for areas I needed to personally correct and improve upon, to recommit and develop diligence for pursuits I truly valued, and to seek to help strengthen and build up every other individual member. Especially for a marching unit, every member counts, and no one may be left behind,…

Sweat drizzles down my skin as it exits my pores trying to cool my heated body. The blood rushes through my veins pumping blood with the consistent pounding of my heart. Every breath, every second, every action, every thought; I am standing where everything counts. Artificial turf and grass crumpled beneath my torn black shoes and the thick silence only cut by the timed chants from afar. This is the last moment I will stand here for this reason. This is the last moment I will stand here with my family. This is the last moment of my marching band career. Many will say that this was a special group of kids, others will say that this year was a show that was made to make it. I, on the other hand, will say that this was because of seven years of dedication.…

Everyone in the band had one similar goal; to produce an excellent, if not, perfect marching show. Our band rehearsed the marching show day and night, sacrificing our prized hours to create a clean and entertaining show for audiences to enjoy. Water breaks were a blessing, conversations were a sin of the marching world, and mess-ups were lessons of resilience. Our band director made sure the idea of efficiency was planted…

It made me upset because I could tell the individual wanted to be a part of the band family atmosphere. Being in band meant everybody had each other's backs, through the good times and the bad times. That Friday we had a home football game and he sat next to the band in the stands. He watched as play the National Anthem, the fight song and many other pep tunes. He saw us enjoying ourselves and cheering for the football team when they made the only touchdown of the night. I saw him, and I felt horrible. I tried to distract myself and forget. The next home game he came again and he stayed to watch our performance after the game was over. If this was not considered commitment and want, then I guess I do not know what commitment is. He had showed he wanted to be in band, he wanted to be a part of the band family atmosphere. Instead some leadership just pushed him aside. I still feel bad for not saying anything and standing up to the member in leadership that said he had to prove he wanted to be in band. I could have said something. Looking back, I wish I would have spoken…

Oh, I remember that trip! Chloe had gotten drenched because her younger brother had emptied a bucket of ocean water on her, while we were tanning at the beach. I reminisce while looking through the old pictures of me and Chloe. These photos are like snapshots of the most amazing times of my life. I can’t stand the thought of losing her so I decide to go see her while she is at rehearsals for the play that she is directing. I reach 2 hours before the play is scheduled to start, so I can get the chance to talk to her. I enter the community theater building and walk down the aisle that leads to the stage where Chloe is standing. I walk over to her and tap her shoulder. She turns and looks at me with surprise and confusion swirling in her eyes.…

I was able to finally truly enjoy my favorite music live. There truly is nothing like hearing music you emotionally connect to live for the first time. It is a truly amazing experience that I believe everyone should get a chance to live. It was nearing the end of the concert and I was singing as loud as I could. They members came back out at the end and began throwing tshirts. I honestly believe that if i hadn't sung and yelled so loudly and unabashedly I would’ve never been thrown a t shirt by my favorite member of the band and that would’ve been a shame. Ending the concert on that incredibly high note just made the night all that much better. On the way back to the car it seemed so quiet. Obviously my ears were adjusting from the change in volume and I was able to reflect. I was and still am so thankful for the opportunity to see my favorite artists live in concert. On the way back to the car it was dark and quiet. We got into the car and because we’re both addicted to our phones, me and and Kellie both charge our phones. As our phones turn back on, we start getting notifications that we had missed while our phones were dead. The first thing I do is open Snapchat and go through my…
