Mariah Carey Born on March 27, 1969 in Huntington, New York, Mariah Carey was the child of Alfred Roy and Patricia Hickey. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariah_Carey) During her childhood, she and her family struggled due to their race. When Mariah was three, her parents divorced. While her siblings moved with their father, Mariah and her brother stayed with their mother. At the age of four, she would sneak a radio with her to her bedroom and sing and try to find peace within the music she listened to. In elementary school, Mariah was successful in the different subjects that caught her attention, subjects like music, literature, and art while others did not interest her. While attending Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, Mariah Carey soon started writing poems with melodies, which is one of the ways she became a singer-songwriter. Her mother, Patricia trained her to help maintain voice control and skills. In high school Mariah began working with Gavin Christopher, who helped her write songs. The two of them began writing and composing songs in Christopher’s basement of his father’s store while she was a senior.
She lived alone and worked as a waitress in restaurants to support herself, but would get fired after two weeks on the job.
Working late into the night with high hopes of completing a demo, she still had her hopes of music. While she finished her four-tracked demo, she would hand it to music labels, but got rejected and failed every time. However, she unsuccessful with that, she was then introduced to pop singer, Brenda K. Starr. Their friendship grew and Brenda helped her succeed in the music industry. Brenda soon met the head of Columbia Records, Tommy Mottola and handed the demo tape. After that, Mottola and his staff agreed on making Mariah Carey their main female pop
artist. She then worked on her first debut album titled, Mariah Carey. The album stayed on top of the music charts for several weeks. Her song, “Vision of Love” won her Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Mariah Carey became the best-selling album of 1991 in the U.S. After the album's success, began recording her second album titled Emotions released on September 17, 1991, which was another successful album. In the year of 1993, Mariah Carey married Tommy Mottola and began working on her third album titled, Music Box, which was released on August 31. The featured song, “Hero” became one of her most popular and most inspirational songs ever. The song rose to the top of the music charts, which brought her fame and popularity from Europe. Staying number one as an album, Music Box became one of the best-selling albums of all time. On October 3, 1995, her fourth album Daydream was released. Her song “One Sweet Day” was popular on the album which stayed on top of the Hot 100 music chart for 16 weeks, and was the longest-running number-one song to stay on top in music history. In 1998 she divorced her husband Tommy and she began working on her movie and song album Glitter, but pushed it aside and began working and writing for another album. Her fifth album Rainbow was released on November 2, 1999 which ranked number two on Billboard 200. She soon, then changed her record label from Columbia to Virgin Records. The album hit the charts again, staying at the top. By 2007, she worked on her eleventh album titled, E=MC2. It charted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 436,000 making it the biggest sales of her career. She was featured in movies such as Precious and released a fragrance, “M.” In 2008 she eloped to Nick Cannon, and gave birth to fraternal twins, Monroe and Moroccan, three years later on April 30. After six years of marriage the two, Mariah and Nick divorced. On September 25, 2009 she had released her twelfth album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, which topped number three on the music charts. Mariah released another album titled, Merry Christmas II You on November 2, 2010 and joined season twelve of American Idol as a judge replacing Jennifer Lopez in 2012. The summer of 2013 she released her lead single, “Beautiful” featuring singer, Miguel and ranked number 15 on the Hot 100 charts. The camp helps city youth with arts and helps introduce them to career choices and opportunities.
