On October 26, 2017, I attended the play Marisol, by Jose Rivera, performed by The Ohio State University Department of Theatre. The production is directed by Beth Kattelman, produced by Mandy Fox, and performed by undergraduates of Ohio State University at the Drake Performance Center in Thurber Theatre. I came into this play not knowing what to expect because I did not think to ready a summary of the play online. After watching this play, I was highly impressed with the various design elements along with political issues that can be relatable in today’s society.
One of the most important design elements in this play was the scenery. When I first walked into the theatre the stage props were the first thing I noticed, which was all designed by the scenic designer Justin A. Miller. The stage had an interesting set up of three different scenes. Starting from the left side of the stage, there was an office set up, a bedroom that looked like it was set in a very poor area in the middle of the stage, and what looked like a bus station with just two seats on the left of the stage. The middle of the stage had the most impressive scenery throughout the play.

Marisol can be highly considered political. A major political theme in the play is the economics of New York. One example of economic downfall in the play that stands out is the Woman in Furs, who is played by Eve Nordyke. Once a wealthy woman, she has become a victim of torture because she went over her credit card limit. She is forced to roam the streets of New York during the war without any money. There was even economic downturn before the war. For example, the Man with Ice Cream, played by Nathan Minns, stormed into Marisol and Junes office ranting about how he did not get his dream job in acting.
