According to Rosalynn Carter, “A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be”. This quote relates to Marlee Matlin because she went outside of her comfort zone to take on her disability. But one quality does not make a leader. A good leader exhibits many attributes that set them apart from others.
Not only that, but also.... Marlee Matlin showed herself to be a strong willed person. When working on tv shows whether it was acting or dancing, she received many letters of appreciation from people whom she had given confidence to and shown them that deaf people can do everything that hearing people can do, except hear. Matlin played a role that brought out her comedic side in her, she said: “This role let me put out the funny side of me. There’s nothing in it about deafness, It just happens that I am deaf. It’s time for me to explore something different.” Matlin later on played a role as a deaf counselor in a tv show with other deaf actors. The hearing actors on the show also learned sign language because one of the main characters is deaf, and it also makes communicating easier. They use sign language in most if not, all of the episodes. In a few episodes, they just sign, they don’t speak at all. But, of course there are closed captions. …show more content…
Matlin rejected the options of getting hearing aids or cochlear implants, learning english and how to speak, and learning to lip read.
Matlin insisted on learning sign language and communicating that way. Her interpreter Jack Jason, is always at her side wherever she goes. Jason and Matlin have been a team since the beginning of Matlin’s
career.
Jason was a child of deaf parents, so he went to college and started studying sign language. He dropped out some time later and started following Matlin. When it came time for her to start her own company so that she didn’t have to wait around for work, he helped her out by interpreting for her. Matlin is changing the way hearing people view deaf people and their abilities. With her work and accomplishments, she is demonstrating that deaf people can do everything that a hearing person can do, except hear. She didn’t choose the option of getting hearing aids or cochlear implants. She didn’t choose to learn to lip read or learn english and speak. She choose to remain deaf and learn sign language. She has had a lot of support and help from her family, friends, and her interpreter.
