Philosophers like Peter Singer and Martha Nussbaum bring up issues like this in the film The Examined Life as they associate the meaning of life, with how we live our lives within a society. Both philosophers discussed how society uses its advantage to oppress the minorities, they also brought up solutions for closing the gap/wedge between the majority …show more content…
They hold the opinion that individuals, who are gifted with opportunities oppress those who are not as lucky. Peter Singer mentioned that wealthy individuals use their money to oppress the poor, he mentioned that the money which could be used to save the life of an individual living in a poor country is spent on expensive products/goods. These individuals would spend money on expensive clothing, without thought without realizing, that such an amount could be used help those who are less fortunate (minorities). She stated that stronger gender, uses the failures of the weaker to its advantage, causing an oppression of the weaker gender. Both views depict how individuals, with greater opportunities use them to their advantage (to help themselves) rather than aiding those who are not as fortunate. What is the key to a perfect, equal, yet just society? There may not be one. Both Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” and Isaac Asimov’s “All the Troubles of the World” are short stories that satirize societies which are based on the goal of equality but which reveal deeply inhumane and unequal restrictions and practices. The bureaucratic and technological means of restricting the exercise of reason and development of ethics or memory in society in both stories suggests that it is impossible for an equal and humane society to exist.…

It is evident throughout history that women are seen as a lesser power in comparison to their male counterparts. The texts Erin Brockovich (Erin Brockovich, 2000), The Help (The Help , 2011), and One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest (Kesey, 1962), discuss this power imbalance and convey the way in which women adapt to their societal context and measurement, making use of unconventional power. Institutional power which operates through gender commonly impacts society in a negative manner, resulting in retaliation through unconventional power by oppressed groups. Male characters within these texts have power which related to wealth, employment and politics; where as women have the power of their bodies, sexuality and the power over their home as the homemaker.…

In all five of these categories, the dominant group who oppressed people are those who actually hold power. I agree with Young’s idea that the way to oppress others it to obtain power, and until we can demolish the gap between privileged and non-privileged, we will always have a group suffering from oppression. Examples of women who are powerless when it comes to the act of decision making are those who follow through with the horrible act of being persuaded in to getting an abortion, especially for unplanned…

In our everyday lives we come across barriers, barriers of inequality, barriers of exclusion, barriers that prevent us from accomplishing our goals and ambitions. However, do we let these obstacles get in the way of our wants and desires or our basic rights and privileges? No, we do not. We work as individuals and together to encourage positive change in today’s society. People of the past and present have demanded equality and the right to be included in things rightfully owed to them, resulting in either an influential change that is usually beneficial or occasionally, a hindrance.…
