He persuaded many people to fight against the cruelty of segregation. Because of him, African Americans achieved more progress toward racial equality in America than the previous 350 years had produced. One of King’s many accomplishments is the March on Washington. On August 28th, 1963 more than 200,000 people joined King for a political rally in Washington, D.C. for freedom and jobs. The March on Washington was a main part in the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout this meeting he shared his thoughts on how he believed African Americans should gain freedom and be equal with whites. On this day he also gave his well known “I Have a Dream” speech. The speech lasted about twenty minutes but was full of moving words about how America is not doing what they know is right and making everyone equal. Although he didn’t accomplish his dream of making the world racist free, he brought the United States a lot closer to it. King is officially known for advancing the civil rights movement. He brought the world's attention to an issue that was was a problem everywhere during the time. King has affected us today because unlike the mid 1900’s, there is a law that everyone no matter what race should be treated equal. Therefore, they are paid the same, can go to school with each other, and can use the bathroom in the same places. Even though equality was the main way King has affected our lives today, he also proved a point to the world that it is possible to fight for for something you believe in, making it happen, and doing so by not using violence. It is very important to know that no violence can work just as good as using violence, and in today's times it would be a lot easier to work things out with other countries using this method instead.
